Maybe it's because we suffered through weeks of duds, but I really appreciated the new water-based horror flick Sea Fever.
For one, it's well acted with a solid cast, including Connie Nielsen, Dougray Scott, and Hermoine Corfield. The script and direction by Neasa Hardiman are first rate, with a nice balance of character, plot and pacing. And the film looks good, with decent effects and slick photography, both above and below the ocean's surface.
Granted, all those elements don't necessarily make a good movie. But Sea Fever is good. It's a simple premise -- the crew of a fishing trawler battle a deadly parasite after being marooned at sea -- that's well executed. The budget was low I'm sure, but Hardiman and company capitalized on that with a limited setting, a likeable cast, and just enough gore and special effects to please genre fans.
This isn't a blood-and guts flick by any stretch, and everything is played straight instead of campy, but it works. Hardiman knew what kind of movie she wanted to make, she had the means to make it, and she pulled it off. This is a stone-cold thriller through and through.
Sea Fever held my attention from start to finish, and I highly recommend it to horror fans who want something of quality. It's a Good.
