Here's a fun fact Shawn might not mind me sharing: he's got arachnophobia. Shawn and spiders = oil and water. He's terrified of them.
Suffice to say he didn't join me for this screening of the old-fashioned creature feature Itsy Bitsy, which is about a giant (ish) spider.
What did he miss? A pretty decent gateway horror movie which resembles the kind of monster flicks I grew up with. It's more serious than Arachnophobia, and not quite as scary, but it's light on gore, so the film could work for less squeamish kids 10 and up.
At the heart of the movie is a family dynamic which gives the proceedings some soul. The movie is about loss and learning to move on with an aching heart. Heavy stuff for what is essentially a monster movie, but I liked it. And the performers, which include Elizabeth Roberts, Arman Darbo and Denise Crosby, are good. Veteran genre actor Bruce Davison is excellent as always.
But what about the Itsy Bitsy spider? It's largely a practical effect, and a good one. Millennials used to photorealistic special effects will think it looks fake, but for someone who grew up with, and thrives on, this kind of thing, it's fun to watch. And if you don't dig spiders, it'll get under your skin.
I enjoyed the movie, and will watch it again with my son when he's a couple of years older. That makes it a Good in my book.
