Hey oh! I'm back! Today, I'm going to quickly run down my thoughts on the 2010 DreamWorks animated deconstruction of the superhero genre, "Megamind"...
An epic battle between the villainous Megamind, and the heroic Metro Man results in the unexpected death of Metro Man. Now, without his arch-enemy to combat... what's a villain to do?
This is a wonderfully fun, and surprisingly interesting examination of the roles of a hero and a villain in each others lives- and sometimes how our roles in life can change.
The story is, while very much like a comic book on the surface, offers a nice emotional depth in it's look at what it means to be good or bad- and how circumstances can change us and help us find how we are.
The characters are wonderful, and the interesting relationships each have to each other helps to keep the story grounded, and adds a nice texture to the emotional make-up of the characters. Every single one of them garners our sympathy and empathy over the course of the movie, and makes you invest in them emotionally. I also really loved the character designs. They were all unique, and fitting for their roles in the story.
The voice acting was great as well. The voices fit each person perfectly. Special credit to Will Ferrell for stepping outside of his usual loud, obnoxious, and immature character type, and bringing us a character who's voice doesn't annoy us, and makes us WANT to cheer for his success.
If your a fan of comics, and especially deconstructions of the superhero genre, I would recommend "Megamind". It's fun, well paced, and a nice way to chill out on the couch for a bit. I'm putting it in "The Good".
