I profess my only real exposure to DC's Teen Titans is via the comedic kids' cartoon Teen Titans Go!, and that's because my seven year old loves it. OK, I find it pretty amusing too. As Starfire would say, it's the good.
So I'm not among the group of fans who have complained DC's new Titans series, which recently debuted on their streaming service, and just made the jump to Netflix, isn't an accurate representation of the characters. Those naysayers say it's too dark, too violent, too whatever.
Whatever!
I jumped in knowing there's supposed to be Robin, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy, and they're superheroes fighting bad guys. And this is supposed to be a more grown-up approach, which usually means violence and swears, hopefully boobies.
Well, Titans is to DC Comics what the Daredevil and Punisher Netflix shows are to Marvel Comics, and I dig it as such. The storylines are serious in tone, the violence rough, and yes, there's swearing. I'm not all the way done, so boobies... stick with us!
Robin FUCKS people up, for the record. It's a joy to behold. No more "Holy ____, Batman" for this kid!
I'm far enough in to get the point, and I'm enjoying this rough and tumble spin on what I've always seen as a lame addition to the DC cannon. I appreciate the makers are willing to go all the way, unlike the DC Cinematic Universe, which started off wanting to take a dark and serious approach to Batman, Superman and company, but added comic relief and didn't push the violence and language. Shit or get off the pot, guys!
Thankfully, Titans has gone all the way. And it's a fun, dark ride for it. A Good for me.
