Netflix has created a nice niche for itself as a purveyor of B-grade genre flicks, and we in The Basement applaud the move, as that's our bread and butter here. Some are better than others. Spectral was decent, The Open House not so much. A couple of weeks back they unleashed Tau, featuring the voice of Gary Oldman and It Follows and The Guest starlet Maika Monroe in a one-location sci-fi thriller about a kidnapped woman and a deadly AI.

When horror works, it's a commentary on our times, not a random selection of torture porn scenes. Sure, there can be gore and shorts shitting moments, but the best genre flicks have something to say about the world we live in at the time they're made. So how does a horror movie about social media reflect our modern society? Does The Den have something to say? Stick with me.

Killer squirrels and now a robot serial killer ? What's this world coming to!?! Actually, a robot serial killer is a pretty cool idea, and MGM must have thought the same thing as the studio has bought the rights to writer/director Rob McLellan's short flick Abe. Check out McLellan's short below and judge for yourselves, but I think this could be a cool movie. The flick hints at some sweet ideas and Abe is a chilling enough character. Besides, it's at least an original idea for a horror film as opposed to another remake, reboot or sequel. McLellan will write and direct the feature with  Kevin Misher and Steve Tzirlin producing.
