CGI-heavy I, Frankenstein trailer debuts

Frankenstein is the mack these days. Frankenstein's Army. The Frankenstein Theory . Now I, Frankenstein . I hope Mary Shelley 's ancestors are rolling in the dough. I don't know what to make of the below preview for the upcoming I, Frankenstein. I dig Aaron Eckhart and think Yvonne Strahovski puts the hot in hot, but this comes across as the bastard son of Underworld and Van Helsing . Granted, it's from the makers of Underworld, but still . . . Judge for yourselves. I dig revisionist stuff, and love me some action and monsters, but this preview does nothing for me. Actually, it almost put me to sleep. We'll know for sure if I, Frankenstein sucks or not come Jan. 24, 2014. George Bell reviews Van Helsing

I've watched Van Helsing three times now, and while I keep finding things to like here and there, it just doesn't come together as a whole. I really, really wanted to like it more than I do. I'm a fan of Stephen Sommers, and I see what he was trying to do. He wanted to make one big homage to the classic Universal monsters (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.). That's a noble sentiment, but when ambition outstretches the material, it's time to re-evaluate. Sadly, the changes that I think needed to happen never materialized, and we're left with this mess of a monster movie gone wrong. Van Helsing's biggest mistake is how much ground it tries to cover in terms of combining all these different elements from separate stories. The basic plot centers around Dracula using Dr. Frankenstein and his monster to figure out how to create and sustain life. Dracula and his three brides have tried - and failed - to make their offspring viable, but nature just wasn't hav...

Guest Review: "The Satanic Rites of Dracula"

Mike S reviews a classic horror film- "The Satanic Rites of Dracula". "When I found out that Hammer Films was alive and well again- and in the process of producing a few new horror films, I started getting a little nostalgic. Growing up, I was a HUGE fan of the Hammer horror films, and have been looking for them on DVD for quite a while. A horror library is not complete without at least one of their films. It was with great pleasure when I found "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" on DVD. I was literally, "geeking out" over it. I felt like a kid opening the biggest present under the Christmas tree. It's sad, but true. I couldn't wait to watch it, but I wanted it to be special. At night, with the lights off... alone. Just me, Dracula, and Van Helsing. And, man, was it worth it. By today's standards, this movie might not be considered great- but for me it was fantastic. This film has the British sensibilities for horror, without relyi...
