Micro Review: The Social Network

A long overdue view here in The Basement, and worth the wait . . . for the most part. There's nothing technically wrong with David Fincher's Facebook tale, but the film is also proof positive that sharp direction, great writing (by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin) and solid performances do not a great movie make. The film is a decent ride, but only holds the viewer's interest enough to make it worth taking once. I enjoyed my experience with The Social Network, but won't be back for more. And that, sadly, earns it a Bad from this Basement Dweller. As someone who is a die hard Fincher fan, that's a tough statement to swallow.

And the Oscar goes to . . .

No one yet. But the nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced in Hollywood earlier today and it's a list made up of movies you won't find us talking about here in The Basement, save for in passing. Not to say that they aren't any good, but award material isn't exactly our schtick with the exception of last year's Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker. The film owes its success to us as we reviewed it before most moviegoers had heard of it. Now that we're done being humble, we'll move on to the list of nominees. The King's Speech and The Social Network lead with 12 nominations each. I've seen neither. My favourite movie of last year, True Grit, is next with 10. Those who care to tune in should mark Feb. 27 on their calendar. The above picture is of show hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. It's meaningless awards' season once again

Alright, maybe that's a tad unfair. Awards like the Golden Globes and the Oscars are important to those who are nominated and those who win. But, to a movie fan, does it really matter? Hmmm?. I think not. It's especially meaningless to fans of Basement cinema as genre pictures and low-budget films often go unnoticed. But, to our credit we loved The Hurt Locker before the Academy did. Now that the preamble is out of the way, the 68th Golden Globes were announced earlier to day by Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood. We've included the full list for you below. Shawn and I have watched hardly any of the nominated pictures, so we aren't in a position to comment. But I'm sure someone out there cares!
