Halloween Day by Day: "Brightburn" (2019)

Superhero movies have become a huge part of the movie industry over the past eleven years.  Horror has also gained a bit more "respectability" within the movie industry as well.  It was only natural- and a matter of time before someone put the two together... An alien spacecraft crash lands on a small farm.  The Beyers find within it a survivor... a baby.  As the boy reaches his teen years, he starts to exhibit strange powers, and the Beyers begin to wonder: Will this child from the stars become Earth's savior...? I can't say enough positive things about 2019's " Brightburn " by James Gunn, Kenneth Huang, and David Yarovesky.  The idea of a "dark" Superman story has been done often enough before by DC Comics in their Elseworlds comics, but this movie takes it to a new level, and makes it much more visceral and fascinating to watch.  The progression of the story is natural and quite believable- pulling you along willingly.  The pacing i...

When it rains, it pours in Netflix's The Umbrella Academy trailer

This looks like some next level weird shit, and I'm A-OK with that! Based on the violent and wacky comic-book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, The Umbrella Academy seems like a mashup of The X-Men and... I'm not sure what. But there's a talking monkey, so I just rolled with it.

The Animated Addict: "Megamind" (2010)

Hey oh!  I'm back!  Today, I'm going to quickly run down my thoughts on the 2010 DreamWorks animated deconstruction of the superhero genre, "Megamind"... An epic battle between the villainous Megamind, and the heroic Metro Man results in the unexpected death of Metro Man.  Now, without his arch-enemy to combat... what's a villain to do?

Mike S's Top 5 Marvel Heroes That Deserve a Big Screen Adaptation

Recently, I did a list of my top five DC heroes that I felt deserved a big screen adaptation ( you can read it here ).  It's only fair that I do one for Marvel, right? Right. I have to be honest though- I'm not altogether familiar with the Marvel heroes, having grown up mostly reading DC... however, there are a few that have caught my eye over the years, and I think would make good movie entertainment.

Wonder Woman and the Superhero Movie

Another summer where franchise fatigue has set in, and sequels that would have, at one time, been guaranteed hits, underperform. Yet the superhero movie continues to reign supreme. Spider-Man: Homecoming has earned $176 million in eight days. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 $386 million to date, and Wonder Woman $375 million and climbing.

Jason and Shawn review: Superheroes

Superheroes Jason: I get mixed signals from this documentary, the same mixed signals I feel toward the superhero movement. On the one hand, good on someone for standing up for what they believe in and trying to make a difference. On the other hand, seek professional help crazy fuckers! I think the filmmaker is as conflicted about the whole thing as I am. I had a hard time grasping what I was watching only because it's hard to believe people are really doing this. I can't admire them because I think they're mentally ill. And most of them will probably get killed in the process. As a work of journalism, I liked Superheroes. But I won't watch it again. So it gets a Bad from me! Shawn: Wow. Did I ever consider a vigilante-costume-ass-kicking gig? Why sure. The reason I didn’t actually partake in it? I’m not mentally unstable NOR do I have superpowers. I came off this doc with a bad taste in my mouth. It was far more sad than I could really have imagined. I f...

Next on the chopping block: Superheroes

Believe it or not, there are real superheroes out there trying to make the world a better place for everyone to live in. They have costumes and secret identities and even some not-so-cool gadgets to help them fight crime. Yes, one can argue anyone who puts on a costume and ventures out to deliver justice has a screw or three loose, and that's one of the many points touched on in this HBO documentary. And it's a point Jason and Shawn ponder on this, the first of five summer specials bridging seasons three and four of We Came from the Basement. Does this look into the lives of real superheroes inspire with its tale of heroism and doing good? Or is this documentary little more than a depressing excuse to drink some beer? Stick with us! The May Special arrives tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. PST. Our special episodes are stripped down versions of the radio show. Just a review and some lively banter. We'll be back in The Basement and back on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops in October ...
