Micro Review: Drive (2011)

Some have called Nicolas Winding Refn's action film pretentious, others have claimed it brilliant. I say it's a little bit of both. And it's 100 per cent badass. Ryan Gosling personifies cool as Driver, a mysterious loner who falls in love with the wife of a convict. How that relationship spirals into a blood-soaked crime film is a ton of fun. Drive alternates between noir romance and brutal violence, often flawlessly. And there's one fuck of a brilliant car chase to boot. Not to mention that genius elevator sequence. Refn's film isn't for everyone, but if you dig different this is the film for you. The cast plays to perfection, and moody has never looked so good. Plus who can argue with a film that stars hotties Christina Hendricks and Carey Mulligan? Late to the party for sure, but Drive rates a Good from me.

Stupid woman sues distributor of Drive for false advertising

And, by including the word stupid in the headline, Sarah Deming of Michigan is probably going to sue us for defamation of character. But that's OK. We could use the publicity. In what has to be one of the dumbest stories I've ever heard, Deming is suing the distributor of the critically acclaimed Nicolas Winding Refn thriller Drive and the theatre she saw it in because she claims it was sold as a Fast and Furious style action flick. It turns out Drive is nothing of the sort. In her suit, which was filed at the sixth judicial circuit court in Oakland, Michigan, Deming says the film "bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film ... having very little driving in the motion picture." She also wants a refund for her movie ticket, a ban on "misleading movie trailers" and plans to let others get in on the action by turning it into a class-action lawsuit. Neither Shawn nor I have seen Drive. Matt Bellamy has and loved it. But we can all agree...

Trailer Alert: Drive

It's late, I'm drunk, but Basement contributor Matt Bellamy posted this wickedly awesome red band trailer for Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming action thriller that took Cannes by storm. Suffice to say it looks awesome. And it makes Canadian actor Ryan Gosling look like a total badass. Throw in Ron Perlman, Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks and Albert Brooks and you've got a cast to die for. The story? A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong. Based on the premise and footage below, I'm sold! Bring it!  No word yet on a release date.
