The first Dawn of the Planet of the Apes TV spot

Alright, I admit it, I haven't seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes yet. Yup. The presence of James Franco turned me off, and I'm just kinda done with the whole Planet of the Apes thing. But a lot of people dug Rise, and it made a boat load of cash, so we've got a sequel headed our way this summer. The first TV spot appeared during the season finale of The Walking Dead , and now it's landed here in The Basement.

A new dawn rises on a planet of apes

Many many... many years ago, I watched the original " Planet of the Apes " movies and loved them.  I also found Tim Burton 's rendition enjoyable.  I also really enjoyed the recent reboot, " Rise of the Planet of the Apes ".  At the time, I was rather interested in seeing where they would take the franchise. Well, the wait is almost over as some small appetizing tidbits trickle our way from 20th Century Fox.  One morsel has confirmed that Jason Clarke of " Zero Dark Thirty " fame has been signed to appear in the next installment of the story- " Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ".  While Clarke's role is still a securely guarded secret, it is known that Matt Reeves (" Let Me In " will be directing- and that the script was written by Mark Bomback .  Peter Chernin , Dylan Clarke, Amanda Silver, and Rick Jaffe will be procuding. Other than those names, and a projected release date of May 23, 2014, the only tasty piece of info...

Jason and shawn review: Let Me In and Monsters

Let Me In Jason: I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. On the one hand it's beautifully made, expertly acted, gruesome, dark and gritty. On the other, it's a pointless remake that lacks the heart, soul and emotional core that made Let the Right One In so damn good. Thankfully the vampire here is still a monster and still a little girl. Chloe Moretz is brilliant. Director Matt Reeves is a master at staging shots and atmosphere, but the film is sluggish and doesn't generate many thrills. Let Me In rates a Bad. We didn't need it to be made, but at least it isn't a total failure. Shawn: Branding something as Made In the U.S.A. doesn't make it better. I guess cashing in on the success of something else is what America is best at. I have yet to see the original, but am willing to bet it's better. This moves at a slow pace and I have a big gripe about the CGI kill in the tunnel. Usually I can accept CGI, but it was unnecessary here. The idea of this ...

Next on the chopping block: Let Me In and Monsters

What can we say other than we here in The Basement love our monsters. Maybe it's that primal fear left over from when we were children scared of the hairy monster in the closet or the masked bogeyman under the bed, but monsters or fascinating. Monsters are cool. As long as they are on the big screen that is. Tonight we're putting two little-seen but well-regarded horror tales on the chopping block. First up is Cloverfield director Matt Reeves's vampire film Let Me In, which is a remake of the Swedish flick Let The Right One In. The Basement's Matt Bellamy actually likes the remake better, so that has Shawn and I curious. Speaking from my own experience, Let The Right One In is a modern classic. Never mind the horror part. Then we take on Monsters, the low-budget directorial debut of Gareth Edwards that promises big things in terms of giant aliens running amok. We're jazzed to see it, but will Monsters actually be any good? Stick with us! And stick around for o...

Up Yours Twilight! Let Me In is the real deal.

When I heard Cloverfield director Matt Reeves was remaking the absolutely smashing Swedish vampire movie Let The Right One In, I cringed. Not because I didn't dig Cloverfield, but the thought of anyone remaking that modern classic made me want to punch midgets in the nutsack. Now we've got the teaser trailer for Reeves' Let Me In, and it looks damn good. The mood is right. The intensity is right. It doesn't look like Hollywood screwed with the story. This could work. We'll know for sure when the movie opens later this year. A remake is unnecessary, but if one is going to happen, then at least do it right. I think Reeves has done that. Watch the trailer and judge for yourself!
