Review: Cursed Films Season 1, Ep. 1

People are fascinated by the filmmaking process, which I find interesting because, having been involved in the making of a few films, it's more frustrating than interesting. But there are some movies with truly storied histories, and Shudder's new five-part documentary series looks at the urban legends surrounding some popular horror movies. The series kicks off with The Exorcist, a movie alleged to have caused audiences to faint, lured demons into movie theatres, and even had a murderer among the crew. Director Jay Cheel approaches the subject with an open mind, and includes interviews with cast members Linda Blair and her demonic counterpart, Eileen Dietz. He also talks with journalists, historians, and a real-life exorcist about The Exorcist, it's cultural impact, and the stories that surround it. I appreciate how Cheel isn't interested in rumours, but in getting to the facts as best he can. We learn Exorcist director William Friedkin could be a real jerk t...

The Possession of Hannah Grace and Anna and the Apocalypse

Not rain nor sleet nor technical difficulties can keep the latest podcast From The Basement from reaching your fine ear holes. Such is the case this week, at least. Please don't hit us with a Me Too for the fine ear holes comment... But the Basement Boys did experience some technical glitches during their latest recording session, not that you'll notice, and the show went on. What did Jason and Shawn ramble on about this week? The usual of course: all things entertainment!

Retro Review: Hell Night (1981)

Given the success of John Carpenter's Halloween and Friday the 13th, the 80s was a hotbed of slasher movies. It can be argued that for a good decade the horror genre was simply made up of crazed/masked killers murdering teens. Many of these films came and went with little fanfare other than poor reviews by mainstream critics. And, as is often the case, several have earned a cult status among fans. Hell Night is one such movie, and it's not a bad one by any standard.

The Month of Horror Day 31: The Exorcist

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And what better day for an exorcism than Halloween?   Try as I might, I just can't not have all roads lead to this! ' The Exorcist ' is the greatest horror movie ever made and in forty years it still holds onto that title without any real competition. It may not be your favourite but you can't not at least admire the incredible craftsmanship on display here. There are way too many double negatives in this review already. Why has it held up so well? Why is it still regarded as tops in the genre? Is it really that scary? Personal opinion, of course but I believe this film holds up so well because of such a universal theme that almost anyone can get behind. I'm not a religious guy at all but the idea of Satan...

The Month of Horror Day 30: The Exorcist

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And Bellamy thinks it's an excellent day for an exorcism. And the runner-up goes to...! Not to say that this is the 2nd best anything, as a matter of fact, this is actually my favourite scary movie of all time. What's great about The Exorcist is that it takes its material and subject matter deadly serious, there's no screwing around here and no one is having fun, it's just straight up terror! That's what I love about it, and it's also something you do not see in many modern horror movies these days where everything is sold with that young audience in mind where as here it's an adult horror film for an adult audience, screw PG-13! This was also the first movie to really deal with exorcisms which has be...
