Review: The Call

The Call has a strong horror pedigree attached to it, given it features icons Tobin Bell and Lin Shaye in prominent roles. And these two titans add a lot of gravitas to an otherwise routine romp. Not to say The Call doesn't have its merits. It does. The premise is fairly original when all's told, and there's a pretty strong moral message as well. These elements, along with some pretty strong acting, raise The Call above a lot of the other recent horror releases we've seen. The Call takes place in 1987, and finds a group of friends playing a sinister game after a tragic accident brings them to a couple's door. That's the simple, Cliff's Notes version of the tale, as there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. Each of these friends has a tragic backstory which is fleshed out during the night as they partake in an eerie phone call that literally reaches beyond the grave. This is a pretty cool idea, and some of the material is well presented. Sadly, all...

The Basement answers Tobin Bell and Lin Shaye's The Call

We're pretty stoked to put our support behind the upcoming horror release The Call, starring genre icons Tobin Bell (Saw) and Lin Shaye (Insidious). And we've got a slick interview coming up to tie into the film's Halloween release. The Call opens everywhere tomorrow, Oct. 30. That's right; you can watch Timothy Woodward Jr.'s retro flick in drive-ins, premium VOD and Digital right before All Hallow's Eve. And this one comes from the creator of Final Destination, so along with its stars, the pedigree is good! What's it about? In the fall of 1987, a group of small-town friends must survive the night in the home of a sinister couple after a tragic accident brings them to the couple's door. Bell and Shaye play the couple, and the friends are played by Chester Rushing, Erin Sanders, Mike Manning and Sloane Morgan Siegel. Shawn and I have the pleasure of interviewing the talented and beautiful Erin Sanders (below) for next week's Basement broadcast! Erin ...

The Grudge trailer will keep you outta the shower

Remember when Psycho made showers scary? Well, probably not. It came out before even I was born. But no doubt you heard the impact the classic shower scene had on audiences. It's the stuff of cinematic legend. The Grudge reboot looks to make showering -- and bathrooms in general -- scary again. In fact, this trailer for director Nicolas Pesce's new flick is pretty darn effective. It re-introduces you to the backstory while setting up new characters and situations. And it's got a pretty stellar cast too. Take a boo: Yup, that's John Cho and Lin Shaye, plus indie fave Andrea Riseborough. While it might seem like a complete reboot, this film actually takes place at the same time as 2004's The Grudge starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Whether it's as scary as that movie remains to be seen. We'll find out when The Grudge creeps into theatres Jan. 3, 2020. Source: Sony

Sunday Night at the Movies: Insidious Chapter 3

One failed attempt later and this pretentious non-film critic finally gets to see the latest instalment of one of his favourite modern horror franchises. Sure, the Insidious movies aren't for everyone, but enough people grooved on these flicks to produce a trilogy. Is the third time the charm or not? Stick with me! I've never understood the hate some horror fans have toward James Wan and Leigh Whannell's horror series. I've likened the Insidious movies to the Poltergeist films of our modern age. Likeable family + spooky spirits = good time. Granted, shit is very different this time around. But, if you didn't dig the first two chapters in the Insidious series, than you probably won't like the third.

No Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne for Insidious: Chapter 3

There's a whole year to go before Insidious : Chapter 3 hits theatres, but a few details about the script have already surfaced online. Seems screenwriter Leigh Whannell is taking the third flick in a bit of a different direction, which is fine by me.

Jason versus Insidious Chapter 2

The first Insidious was a surprise hit that delighted mainstream audiences and polarized horror fans. Some in The Basement dug it, others were left with mixed emotions. I'm one of the ones who dug it. How does Insidious Chapter 2 stand up? Stick with me! The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.  Whatever you felt about James Wan and Leigh Whannell 's Insidious will likely stand with this second film. If you dug the scares, quirky humour and dark journey into The Further, then you'll feel the same about Insidious Chapter 2. If you didn't like what they were slinging then, you probably won't now. As far as I'm concerned, this is a solid sequel that does everything right, improving on the first by fleshing out the back story and continuing the tale of the Lambert family in much the same way that Poltergeist II : The Other Side did with Poltergeist. But I...

The Month of Horror Day 15: Insidious

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! For this entry, Bellamy takes in a horror flick that's so well regarded that it's, well, Insidious . I respect and appreciate what writer-director James Wan did with 'Insidious' more than I actually enjoyed it. Now, that's not to say that I dislike this movie but I didn't flip head over heels for it like a lot of people did--in my mind it's good but not great. I love a good haunted house movie, especially one that relies more on old-fashioned scares instead of R-rated violence and bloodshed, a personal preference that may not float your boat but that's what makes the world go round, as they say! My issues with 'Insidious' echo the same issues that many other people have with this movie:...

Hottie Danielle Bisutti joins Insidious Chapter 2

Cameras are already rolling on James Wan and Leigh Whannell 's Insidious Chapter 2, but the film continues to add members to its cast. Joining first-film veterans Patrick Wilson , Rose Byrne , Lin Shaye , and Ty Simpkins is actress Danielle Bisutti, who is perhaps best known for her roles on Parks & Rec , Last Man Standing, CSI: Miami , Raising The Bar and Without A Trace . Yup, she's a TV chick. No word yet on who the lovely Bisutti is playing, but given how much I enjoyed the first film, I'm not overly concerned. As long as there's ample scares, The Basement is down with Insidious Chapter 2. Film District will release the flick Aug. 30.
