Marcus Flor vs. Krampus (2015)

Are you ready for the holiday season yet? What better way to prepare for this especially joyous December than by watching Krampus! With how cynical this movie is, I think it's quite appropriate for this pandemic edition of the holidays. Krampus rides the line between satirical comedy and genuine horror movie, sometimes veering too hard in either direction. This creates tonal dissonance at times, but not too frequently. The dissonance is most apparent with the in-laws in Krampus, who are full-on caricatures. They work well for the Christmas satire, but feel a bit too one dimensional for "serious horror mode." I think, if this movie went full on slasher cheese, they would've worked better. It's not that I don't think comedy and horror can't be mixed together. But Krampus doesn't completely stick the landing for me. There is still plenty of twisted Christmas spooks to be had, though. I appreciate them giving the titular monster henchmen, and not making hi...

Jay's Top 5 Christmas chillers

'Tis the season to be jolly... and more than a little bit spooky. Sure, there's lots of Christmas cheer to be found in movies like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and It's A Wonderful Life, but there's also plenty of dark and horrific tales to haunt the Yuletide season. Below are my Top 5 favourite horror movies set during the holiday season. So, in no particular order... Silent Night Steven C. Miller updates the notorious slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night with this fun, and violent, slasher film. We've got a great, over-the-top performance by Malcolm McDowell, and an effectively subtle one by Jaime King. Lots of good kills and boobs. Everything a growing boy needs Black Christmas (1974) Yes it was remade in 2006, and we're getting yet one more reboot next week, but none can surpass the low-key chills of Bob Clark's classic. This predated Halloween by four years, and arguably set the bar for every slasher movie to come. Crude and ...

The Ultimate Basement Movie and Krampus

What would the Ultimate Basement Movie be? You know, the best movie for guys like Jason and Shawn who like the same kind of movies that Jason and Shawn like? Would it be a cross between John Wick and the Fast and the Furious franchise starring the staff of Hooters? That question, along with several others, will be answered on this, the third podcast into the new run of We Came from the Basement. As for that Ultimate Basement Movie -- stick with us!

Krampus trailer spreads Christmas fear

Being a Halloween man myself, I haven't really bought into the whole Christmas thing since I was a kid. More so now that I am a father for sure, but the scariest night of the year is still my favourite holiday. So when writer/director Michael Dougherty, he who made the Halloween-themed classic Trick r Treat, announced he was making a movie based on the Krampus legend, I got real excited. Now that I've seen the trailer for what I am sure will be a holiday classic -- MY kind of holiday classic -- I eagerly awaiting the flick's Dec. 4 release date.

Trick 'r Treat director helms Christmas horror tale Krampus

Michael Dougherty 's Trick 'r Treat is hands down one of the best Halloween -themed horror flicks of all time. Hell, it's even one of the best horror anthologies to ever hit the big screen . Scary, funny, awesome. So we in The Basement are pumped Dougherty is ready to make another holiday themed horror movie . This time the man has set his twisted sites on Christmas , and he's tapping into the German legend of  Krampus to make it so.

Merry Krampus from The Basement

Twas the night before the night before Christmas and all through The Basement, a lot of creatures are stirring . . . and they aren't concerned with who's naughty or nice. In truth, it's time for Shawn and I, Mike S. Anthony Michael Bosa, Kara Evans, Matt Bellamy and the entire Basement crew to kick back, crack an alcoholic beverage of choice (might we suggest an ounce each of Kahlua , root beer , eggnog and spiced rum chilled over ice) and spend time with friends and family. Presents are welcome but optional. But don't fear, we've got a new episode for your ear holes comin' at yeah on Friday with reviews of the cartoon-inspired spookfest Saturday Morning Massacre and the alien invasion flick Storage 24 , plus our picks for Top 5 seasonal movies. We promise you there won't be a Love Actually or It's A Wonderful Life in the mix. Until then, we wish you all the best of the holiday and a very Merry Christmas. That's right, it's Christm...
