Marcus Flor vs. The Sinner Seasons 1-2

So I've been watching seasons one and two of The Sinner, and I must say I'm enjoying it. It's been a while since I've watched a series that actually has something interesting to say. It's certainly not flawless, but The Sinner offers a more complicated and human view of murder than you'd expect. It delves into the trauma that leads to the killing, and how that shapes the mind of the culprit. It's not often a show can put me in the headspace of a questionable, or even malicious, person, and make me understand his or her struggle. The acting, writing, and directing are all on point; subtly, but effectively, putting you in the lives of these characters. They pay a lot of attention to everyone's idiosyncrasies and ticks, making each person feel as though they have a storied life beyond our screen. Occasionally you'll get a random side character that seems less developed, but they usually stick around for, at most, one scene. The cinematography is fairly ...

Jason and Shawn's Top 5 genre hotties

What makes a genre hottie? Is it the body? The face? The personality? The ability to scream? This is something Shawn and I ponder on our Stolen and Dredd episode of Film Reviews from the Basement. Because radio doesn't come with pictures, we decided to post images of our Top 5 picks right here for your viewing pleasure. If you want to hear what we have to say, you gotta listen to the podcast. Jason versus Total Recall (2012)

Gotta hand it to Colin Farrell, the dude has been lucky enough to star in two of the most unnecessary remakes of all time, yet both have been better than film fans deserve. Props to you, sir. And this time you get to make nice with two of the hottest women on the planet -- Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel. Well played, Colin. Well played. A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Rekall -- a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led -- goes wrong and he finds himself on the run. As far as remakes go, this is pretty decent. It holds true to the original film -- which was itself an adaptation of Philip K.Dick's We Can Remember It For Your Wholesale -- while bringing new elements to the table, including an Earthbound resistance plot and bad to the ass set design. Did I mention it stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel, two of the hottest women on the planet? It does. Well pla...

Alfred Hitchcock wants you to turn off your cell phones

In what has to be one of the cleverest viral marketing ploys for a movie I've ever seen, we bring you this PSA from the Master of the Suspense himself -- Alfred Hitchcock. And he would like you to turn off your cell phones during the movie. The great Anthony Hopkins brings the director to life here, as he does in the upcoming biopic Hitchcock, due out next month. This is awesome. Pure awesome. And very much in line with the way Hitchcock used to introduce his TV series and films. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, Hitchcock stars Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, and Jessica Biel. Watch, share and enjoy.

Jason reviews The Tall Man

Well slap me silly and call me Susan; this was not the flick I was expecting. Not. One. Bit. When her child goes missing, a mother (Jessica Biel) looks to unravel the legend of the Tall Man, an entity who allegedly abducts children.  First off, this is going to be a tough review to write. I don't want to ruin things for people coming into The Tall Man having only read the above plot synopsis. Suffice to say, us horror fans get more than they bargained for with Pascal Laugier's ambitious little horror movie. And this is not a bad thing. For one, child abduction is a touchy subject matter. I can see why this film hasn't received a wide release despite the presence of its lovely star. As a parent, some of this movie is hard to watch. It's not mean spirited or violent, but it does pack an emotional punch. And good on Laugier and Biel for not dialing down the content or pulling any punches.  Biel gives the performance of her career here. She made a brave c...

The Tall Man trailer brings Jessica Biel home

It's taken long enough, but the domestic trailer for Jessica Biel's upcoming horror romp The Tall Man has finally arrived! To bad it's a tad underwhelming. Sorry, it is. But the film, which features the lovely Biel attempting to unravel the mystery of a child abductor in time to save her young son, still sounds pretty badass. And it's directed by Pascal Laugier of Martyrs fame. We'll see and review it here in The Basement, trust me. The Tall Man hits theatres Aug. 31 and VOD Sept. 25, just in time for Season Four of the show!

Jessica Biel front and centre in The Tall Man poster

And we don't think that's a bad thing at all, given Ms. Biel's loveliness and all. We first told you about Biel's upcoming horror film The Tall Man waaaayyy back in September 2010 when the film was prepping to shoot in Nelson, B.C. Now said movie has been picked up by Image Entertainment and will be released on Aug. 31. Cool, I say. Directed by Martyr's Pascal Laugier, The Tall Man features Biel as a mother who tries to unravel the mystery of the titular legend after her child goes missing. It seems the entity is a being that likes to abduct children. The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have scored the official poster for The Tall Man, and we've "borrowed" it all Christmas present like for your eye holes and posted it below. Enjoy! We look forward to reviewing the film for your ear holes in Season Four.

The Total Recall trailer remembers you

Did that make sense? No. Too bad! We brought you the teaser for the trailer for the Total Recall reboot/remake/second telling earlier this week. Now it's time to deliver the real deal: a trailer that isn't afraid to be a trailer. For your eye holes. I dug the teaser for the trailer well enough. Shawn pointed out on our season finale that it looked too much like The Fifth Element. I agreed. Now, seeing a full two-plus minutes, Len Wiseman's film looks less Fifth Element (save for the flying cars) and more like the 1990's take sans Mars. But it still has Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel and some pretty kick ass looking action scenes. And Colin Farrell is well suited to the hero role. My wife and I have pledged to see this. It's been a long time since the world has been granted a decent sci-fi/action flick. Hopefully this delivers. We'll let you view the trailer and decide for yourselves. Total Recall opens August 3.

The teaser for the Total Recall remake trailer

Seems teaser trailers for trailers are all the rage recently. It's like an appetizer for the appetizer so to speak. Hey, whatever gets yah interested I guess. As much as I hate to say it, I really like what I see here. Not so much a remake of the beloved 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film as it is another take on Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, the Len Wiseman directed sci-fi/action flick stars Colin Farrell in the role of Doug Quaid, a factory worker who begins to suspect he is a spy caught up in futuristic resistance movement. Starring alongside Farrell is Wiseman's wife and No. 1 hottie in the world, Kate Beckinsale. Jessica Biel, who is no ugly duckling either, also stars. Two hotties for the price of one? I'd buy that for a dollar! Total Recall invades theatres Aug. 3 and the full trailer for the movie arrives on Sunday. Stick with us!

Horror film The Tall Man shoots in B.C. Stars sexy actress.

Not to be confused with the infamous character from the Phantasm series, acclaimed French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs) is set to make his English-language debut with The Tall Man this month. The film will lense for eight weeks in Nelson, B.C. Oh, and hottie Jessica Biel stars in it. Hence the above picture. Lucky Nelson residents! The story? Right, that's important: "Set in the town of Cold Rock, The Tall Man is a story of the haunting secrets that hide behind closed doors. With children gone missing over the years, leaving neither a clue nor a witness, superstitious locals talk of ‘The Tall Man,’ a legendary, mysterious dark figure who takes children away never to be seen again. When a woman’s son is taken, the chase is on and with it the quest for answers: Who is the Tall Man, and what happens to the children?"   The Tall Man also stars Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis, Samantha Ferris and Jodelle Ferland. We'll keep you posted as the ...

Micro Review: The A-Team

I love it when a movie comes together! This is the Star Trek of A-Team movies, a fun and furious updating of the classic TV series for a modern audience. Writer/director Joe Carnahan takes everything that was fun about the series and amps it up to ridiculous heights, and he does it with absolutely no apologies. The first hours works better than the second, and the villains suck, but this is still a good time at the movies. Great cast too, once you accept that Mr. T isn't B.A. I pity the fool who doesn't give this a Good rating in The Basement.
