Dead Snow 2 shoots in 2014

Tommy Wirkola’s horror/comedy Dead Snow is one of my favourite genre movies of the last five or so years. And now that the director has finally put Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters to bed, he's ready to tackle a follow up to his cult fave. For those who haven't seen Dead Snow, it features a group of friends enjoying a snowy vacation until a bunch of undead Nazis show up. As for the sequel, Wirkola had this to say to the crew from Shock Till You Drop: "I really want to do a sequel to Dead Snow and we have a script for it," Wirkola said.   "I truly love it and I think it's better than the first film, but it's going to take a lot more money to pull off.  So, we're going to go [into production] next winter, not this winter.  The first Dead Snow was split in two.  The first half is a classical horror movie, the second half goes nuts.  With Dead Snow 2 , it starts right where the first film left off and is full throttle from beginning to end....

Ten movies to watch for in 2013

One of the things Shawn and I get a lot of props for is finding those diamonds in the rough -- the movies that are likely not on everyone's radar -- and bringing them to the public's attention. Some are C-grade indie, others mainstream flicks that still don't get the attention they may or may not deserve. Below are 10 movies I'm looking forward to seeing in the new year, in no particular order. But first, the obvious runners up, those blockbusters that can't be ignored: A Good Day to Die Hard, Man of Steel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, Fast and Furious 6, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Pacific Rim and Star Trek Into Darkness. Now for the list proper: The Conjuring (July 19) Saw and Insidious director James Wan's latest horror flick reveals how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star...

International poster for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters adds Famke Janssen

And that's pretty much all that's different from the domestic poster for the upcoming Jeremy Renner-Gemma Arterton horror/comedy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Oh, and some of the writing is in Japanese or some shit. But hey, any excuse to show off some Arterton, right? Right? And yeah, I'm still looking forward to Tommy Wirkola's spin on the classic story of siblings and witches. Only now Hansel and Gretel are all grown up and kicking witch ass. The lovely Famke Janssen plays a witch named Muriel. The film's release date has been kicked around more than a red-headed stepchild, but we'll finally get to see the R-rated tale on the big screen Jan. 11, 2013. Until then, take another look at the red-band trailer for said film. Cheers to Shock Till You Drop for the poster.

A bloody, sexy look at Hansel and Gretal: Witch Hunters

It's never a good sign when a movie's release date gets bounced around more than a New Orleans whore, but I have faith in the upcoming horror comedy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. For one, director Tommy Wirkola did a bang-up job mixing comedy and gore in the Nazi zombie movie Dead Snow. Secondly, Jeremy Renner is a damn fine actor. Thirdly, Gemma Arterton is just damn fine. Add an appropriate level of camp and violence and you're good to G-O. I think Paramount Pictures and MGM don't know what to do with the project. Blood, humour and children in jeopardy don't sell well. When mixed that is. But at least the studios are trying with this new red-band trailer, which offers plenty of everything I mentioned above. In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. Whether or not it's any good will be answered when the Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters hits...
