The best horror movies do more than scare; they have something to say about society and the human condition, and make us care for the people at the centre of the store. And the best ones do so in a way we're blissfully unaware of, because we're too busy being entertained. Come Play is one such horror movie. Now, Jacob Chase's flick is by no means a classic, but it's a fair shake better than a lot of scary movies that've been put on the chopping block lately. It's not trying to be "woke" (hate that word) or "hip" or "preachy." There's no political agenda.  But Chase touches on a lot of very real issues in the telling of his story, one about an autistic boy who's parents are splitting up, and is feeling very much alone in the world. So alone his primary companion is his smartphone. He relies on it for entertainment, and to communicate with the outside world. I had a fat, lovable cat named Milo who eventually went nuts and had to be given away. While that short, sad story has nothing in common with the upcoming movie Bad Milo -- other than the name Milo -- I thought it was good way to share a little bit more about who I am. Bad Milo is a horror comedy centered on a guy who learns that his unusual stomach problems are being caused by a demon living in his intestines. Said demon comes out of said guy's ass to kill whomever is causing him (the guy, not Milo) grief. Just watch: Tell the truth, I think this looks funny as fuck. And it's got a great cast including Community hottie Gillian Jacobs, former Tick Patrick Warburton and past Satan Peter Stormare. Yeah, this is one we'll be watching here in The Basement for sure. No, we're not talking about Alison Brie or Gillian Jacobs -- although wouldn't that be grand -- but the series' douchebag-turned-not-such-a-douchebag Joel McHale . McHale takes a giant step away from his comedic roots to play a cop in the Scott Derrickson directed paranormal thriller Beware the Night. Derrickson, hot off his success with Sinister , has amassed quite a cast too including Eric Bana , Olivia Munn , Sean Harris and Edgar Ramirez . What's it about you ask? A New York cop (Bana) who has put his faith behind him finds himself target by the Devil . McHale plays his partner and Munn stars and Bana's wife. Sinister was great, and I dug Derrickson's premiere effort The Exorcism of Emily Rose too. Here's hoping he gets a hat trick with Beware the Night. King of Boom Jerry Bruckheimer produces.
