Retro Review: The Monster Squad (1987)

When crafting a month of content targeted at the horror/Halloween crowd, it's important to provide balance between the current, more serious trend in horror, and highlight those movies which focus on how much fun the genre can be. Which is why I present to you a look back at The Monster Squad. The Monster Squad was a little-seen horror/comedy back in the day, but found its audience on home video and TV, and rightfully so. This movie is a hoot, and mixes shocks, laughs and special effects in equal measure, much like Ghostbusters had done a couple of years earlier. As written by Shane Black (who went on to write Lethal Weapon) and Fred Dekker (who directed Night of the Creeps), The Monster Squad is about a group of monster-obsessed kids who discover Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and a gill man have taken up residence in the neighbourhood. Naturally, the kids decide to take these creatures out before they destroy the world. What ensues is 80s s...

Why we think The Predator fizzled

Shane Black brought the 80s back to cinemas in high style this past weekend with The Predator, a sequel to the hit 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick which Black co-starred in. The film had everything we in The Basement love -- boat loads of action and explosions, gore, profanity and lots of it, and machismo to spare. Mike S and I love the hell out of the movie, as did those of us with similar sensibilities.

The Predator gets a second trailer

Been at war with stomach flu and a head cold (yes, all at once) this weekend, so finally at a point where I had the energy to get up and post something. Given The Predator was granted a second trailer by the folks at 20th Century Fox, I figured I'd tackle that. The teaser for Shane Black's sequel to the 1987 action classic came out a month ago, and left a lot of people underwhelmed. I'm not sure why, or what said people expected, as it worked for me. There was action, the titular monster, and some trademark Black humour. I got what I wanted.

Here we go again bro: The Predator is coming

A couple of years ago we reported screenwriter/director Shane Black was tapped to helm a sequel to the 1987 action classic Predator. Well, an update has arrived in a BIG way. How big? How about a teaser image promising the movie is indeed being made. Yup. Check it out:

Shane Black's Predator flick a sequel, not a reboot

A quick update on a story we posted yesterday, it sounds like that Predator reboot that'll be co-written and directed by Shane Black isn't a reboot at all. It's a sequel! The talented folks at Collider caught up with Black after yesterday's announcement, and he told them he and co-writer Fred Dekker see no point in starting the franchise over. Black adds he "really gets behind inventive sequels ."

Shane Black takes on the Predator reboot

Alright, here's one reboot I can actually get behind. And it's not because I think Predator needs to be remade. No sir. It's about as perfect an action/sci-fi/horror flick as we're ever likely to see. Period. What has me excited for the new Predator is the man 20th Century Fox has tapped to co-write and direct the movie -- Shane Black .

Jason versus Night of the Creeps

Of all the 80s horror flicks I missed growing up, Fred Dekker 's Night of the Creeps is the one I'd been most dying to see. I have no idea why. It just felt right. Thank Jebus Basement contributor Matt Bellamy owns the flick, and was willing to lend it to me. Did Night of the Creeps meet my expectations? Stick with me! Alien brain parasites, entering humans through the mouth, turn their host into a killing zombie. Some teenagers start to fight against them.
