Back in 2006, director Mike Mendez made the creepy little low-budget horror flick The Gravedancers. The film, which I previously reviewed right here , tells the story of three friends who unwittingly unleash a trio of angry spirits hell bent on killing them. The film's a lot of fun, and offers more than a few scares. I watched it for a third time this past weekend, and was struck by how it touched on the #MeToo movement long before the phenomenon existed.

Escapee is one of those flicks we pimped here in The Basement and immediately lost track of. Not because of a lack of interest on our part, but because it's one of those hundreds of movies that disappeared into the cinematic ether every year. You know, the kind of movie we hunt down and pass judgment on. So was Escapee worth the effort to find it? Stick with me! Abby (Christine Evangelista) becomes the target of a mentally disturbed man (Dominic Purcell) after he sees her at a mental hospital.

Long before The Basement existed, I ended my work week with a movie double bill over a six pack or two. One flick was chosen from the mainstream, the other from obscurity. On one such Friday night I selected Mike Mendez's The Gravedancers as my obscure title, and there was much rejoicing. Does the flick hold up today? Stick with me! After a night of drunken exploits, Allison, Harris, and Kira are chased and terrorized by the ghosts of a child pyromaniac, an ax murderer, and a rapist.

It's been almost two years since we last pimped Campion E Murphy's Escapee here on the site . Now word has finally reached us that the formulaic sounding slasher flick is coming to DVD and Blu-ray later this year. Anchor Bay Entertainment will release Escapee on April 16, just after our current season ends, but well in time for one of our summer specials.  While on a class observation trip at a local mental hospital , young psychology major Abby Jones (Christine Evangelista, pictured), has a chilling encounter with high-risk patient, Harmon ( Dominic Purcell ). She returns home for an evening of normal study with her two roommates unaware of the darkness shes awakened within him. Later that evening a storm moves in, while Harmon escapes leaving a trail of death, as he makes his toward an unsuspecting Abby. Does sound a little been there, done that. Sometimes the formula works, sometimes it doesn't, but I've always liked me the slasher genre. There's something about the whole killer-on-the-loose concept that lends itself to the gore, hotties and titties that make horror movies work. Scares are optional in slasher mvoies, but we'll take them if we can get them. The new thriller Escapee takes pretty much every slasher movie we've seen before and tosses them into a blender. We've got an escaped mental patient who leaves a trail of bodies in his wake as he stalks a pretty student to her home. Sold! Carter Murphy directs the film, which stars Dominic Purcell, Melissa Ordway (above), Christine Evangelista, Danny Nucci and Faith Ford.
