Retro Review: The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

I'm not sure if 2004 can count as retro, but fuck it. I'm saying it does. Why? Because I recently revisited the much maligned Chronicles of Riddick, and I have a few things to say. The movie underperformed at the box office, and was criticized for taking the small-scale world Vin Diesel and director David Twohy created in Pitch Black, and opening it way the fuck up, creating a whole universe and mythology.

Universal asks Vin Diesel for more Riddick

Mad props to Vin Diesel . The man sure loves his fans, and they sure love him back. And within that relationship is a constant flow of communication from Diesel to his fans about the projects he's working on. Today, Diesel posted on his Facebook page about the DVD success of his latest film, Riddick , and how Universal has asked him to develop a fourth installment in the anti-hero 's franchise. For us Riddick fans, this is very, very good news.

Jason versus Riddick

It's been nine years since Vin Diesel 's cult hero Richard B. Riddick put foot to ass on the big screen . Granted Chronicles of Riddick hardly ignited the box office , but that film and Pitch Black -- which introduced the character back in 2000 -- have a loyal fanbase. So it should come as no surprise that Diesel and writer/director David Twohy dusted Riddick off one more time. Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.  A lot of your enjoyment of Riddick hinges on whether or not you dug Chronicles and Pitch Black. I liked them both, Pitch Black in particular, and I had me a blast with the latest installment as well. Sure its low budget shows, but I've spent the better part of a half decade watching Basement cinema, so this is a veritable blockbuster compared to...

New Riddick trailer is not afraid of the dark

There's nothing like a franchise that knows when to get back to its roots. Judging from the trailer below, writer/director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel have done just that with Riddick . Makers of the next Die Hard movie take note. Pitch Black was a bad to the ass riff on the Alien movies featuring a near perfect antihero. Chronicles of Riddick expanded the universe a bit too much and toned down the action to a PG-13 level. Not so with Riddick. This flick takes Richard B. Riddick back to a desolate sci-fi world filled with bounty hunters and monsters. And the violence is of the R-rated variety. Sign me up. Diesel is joined by Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff in his latest adventure, which hits screens Sept. 6. 28 seconds of Riddick

Vin Diesel loves his fans. How do we know this? 'Cause he consistently keeps 'em updated about projects on his Facebook page. How do you get to 40-million friends? Be a bad to the ass action hero like Vin Diesel. Case in point, the trailer for his much-anticipated Riddick. The threequel sees Diesel back in the saddle as antihero Richard B. Riddick . This flick, which is again written and directed by David Twohy , is supposed to harken back to Pitch Black and shed the much larger universe presented in Chronicles of Riddick . Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.  Riddick returns to theatres Sept. 6. Universal will unleash Riddick next September

We've talked at length about the return of everyone's favourite sci-fi antihero. Now we can let you know when the latest Riddick arrives on the big screen. Sept. 6, 2013. In theatres and Imax. The fall release date is likely because of the movie's hard-R rating. And we're cool with that. Hard-R = awesome in our books, especially when it has to do with the further adventures of one Richard B. Riddick. What' it all about? Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction. Back for another round is Vin Diesel (duh) and Karl Urban. Joining t...

Riddick is back . . . in French!

We haven't heard much about the upcoming follow up to Pitch Black and the Chronicles of Riddick in quite some time, and that includes a release date for the film. But the R-rated sequel is headed our way in 2013 -- so say the French. Below is the quite awesome poster for the film's release in the land of cheese and wine. Nothing yet on a North American date or poster, but we'll keep yah posted as always. Until then, here's a synopsis for said image: Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.   Poster courtesy of Horror-Movies.ca.
