Every Family Movie Night we present our boy with a number of viewing options, ranging from cartoons to live-action Disney fare to average, every day movies. And we show him trailers to help him make a decision. This past weekend he chose 1985's Arnold Schwarzenegger action-classic Commando. Yes... Commando. Now, before you issue my wife and I a Bad Parenting Award, keep in mind video games are far more violent these days. Sure, a lot of people die in Commando. Like A LOT of people! But it's all done in an over-the-top style that, when viewed today, is pretty damn silly. And the language? Well, trust me, kids hear and say worse on the school ground. Commando is simply a lot of macho fun. My boy laughed at all the one liners and had a big, shit-eating grin on his face for most of the running time. It's Father's Day, my first as a dad (woot!), and in honour of The Man Who Taught Me Everything There Is To Know About Being A Man, I thought I'd pay him homage be celebrating one of the many loves he instilled in me at a young age -- a love of film. Dad has been dead 21 years now, more than half my life, but his love of movies lives on. He was a big guy, a contractor, and he loved his hockey. But he enjoyed film as well. Some of my favourite memories of him are the times we went to the movies. If he hadn't introduced me to the films below, I wouldn't have become a student of film and this site/show/podcast probably wouldn't exist.
