On April 7, 1934, a rock slide triggered a tsunami that destroyed a Norwegian village, killing 40 people. Believe it. And two other similar Norwegian tragedies have claimed the lives of more than 100 others. Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (Cold Prey) has used these disasters as the basis for his latest flick, The Wave, a small-budget disaster picture that gives large-scale Hollywood blockbusters a serious run for their money. Yeah, I liked it. A lot.

Check this off as something we're curious to scope out in The Basement. The micro-budgeted Swedish slasher flick Blood Runs Cold has made the VOD rounds here in North America , and now the Sonny Laguna directed flick is ready to hit the home market. Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment and The Collective release Blood Runs Cold on DVD July 2.  As for the story, Winona is a successful artist looking to get away from her stressful life. Her manager rents her a house in her home town where she runs in to an old boyfriend. They go back to the house, only to find out it's not as empty as they assumed.  Betcha some people get killed. Betcha, betcha! Blood Runs Cold stars Hanna Oldenburg, Patrick Saxe, Andreas Rylander, and Elin Hugoson. And yes, it does sound a little like the Norwegian movie Cold Prey . Still, I'm up for almost anything in the genre -- especially when it's made for just $5,000 US and looks pretty slick -- so don't be surprised to see a review pop...

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Today Bellamy travels to Norway for a little slasher movie goodness. Have you ever seen a Norwegian slasher flick? Me either! Well, not until Cold Prey came along and I gotta hand it to them, they did a pretty darn good job! It's your typical slasher set up: group o f good looking friends embark on a weekend getaway, this time to a beautiful and picturesque snowy mountain lodge, only to find that there is some crazy madman hiding out who is hellbent on murder -- I hate when that happens. Where Cold Prey differs from the norm is that first off, this is one very nice looking movie. This is a movie I took in long before The Basement became a reality. I don't remember being overly impressed, yet Cold Prey has never really left my mind. That can only mean it's time for a re-watch. But how does the film stack up? Jannicke, Morten Tobias, Eirik, Mikael and Ingunn are on a snowboarding vacation in Jotunheimen. They are forced to take shelter in an abandoned hotel when Morten Tobias breaks his leg and their car is too far away for them to reach within nightfall. They quickly discover that the hotel was closed in the seventies due to the disappearance of the managers' son. Unknown to them, someone is still living in the hotel, and getting home, or even surviving the stay, isn't as easy as they believe Wow. That's quite the plot description for something that's supposed to be just a slasher movie. But this Norwegian effort isn't your typical North American horror movie. Sure all the trappings are here, but it's just . . . differ...
