Marcus Flor reviews An American Werewolf in London

You could say I'm on a bit of a retro kick lately, as I decided to revisit the hilarious and tense classic An American Werewolf in London. This movie ages like a fine wine; it being even better than I remember it. It's one of the few movies that can switch between horror and comedy so easily, and not pull you out of the whole experience. Sometimes the elements cross over perfectly, leaving you laughing at the cheeky, morbid display before you. I think a lot of this is thanks to comedy director John Landis, and how he approaches the characters. He humanizes them all in a funny, but genuine, way. The leads, David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne), have excellent chemistry; they seem like a couple of buds you actually want to have a beer with. However, it'd be a crime if I didn't mention the practical effects. They are spot on! The transformation scene in particular is both cool as hell and extremely painful looking. The best part of the effects is that the...

Retro Review: Bad Moon

Before Twilight neutered vampires and werewolves there were a string of movies that made the iconic monsters scary. When it comes to werewolves, Eric Red 's Bad Moon is a flick horror fans mention often as an underrated genre classic. I caught the Michael Pare vehicle when it hit VHS back in the mid 90s and dug it then. How does the movie hold up some 20 years later? Stick with me!

Robert Downey Jr. to produce horror comedy Cloaked

I'm sure I speak for almost everyone on the planet when I say Robert Downey Jr. can do it all. Sure, there's naysayers, but they are few and far between. The man's a great actor and movie star , and seems like a wicked cool guy to boot. Now Downey Jr. has put his star power behind a new supernatural horror comedy called Cloaked , which he's producing along with his wife Susan Downey . Suffice to say, the project instantly has my interest.

The Month of Horror Day 19: An American Werewolf In London

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And tonight he's tackling what is arguably one of the best werewolf movies ever made. Ever! Made! GREAT movie, in my top 5 of all time favourite horror movies, and if you're younger and get this mistaken for the "sequel" set in Paris then I hate to say it but all hope is lost for you, just... move along. Directed by John Landis (Animal House, Blues Brothers, Trading Places) with a flair for the absurd but always grounded in reality, it's part horror, part comedy, part... satire? A beast all its own and one of the most straight up entertaining movies of all time with award winning practical makeup effects by the great and true master FX artist, Rick Baker. The werewolf transformation scene is a show stopper that still impresses today and no amount of CG...
