Get your adrenaline kick with this End of Watch trailer

Cop movies haven't been all the rage in a while. Christ, it's been 10 years since Training Day made its gritty mark on the cinematic world. We're due for another fix, and it looks like the new thriller End of Watch could be the dealer. Written and directed by David Ayer, who penned the above mentioned Training Day, End of Watch follows two L.A. beat cops who find themselves targeted by a drug cartel. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena play the cops. Have to admit, this trailer is pretty badass. Looks like there's some found footage going on but, if so, it's barely noticeable. And there's lots and lots of shooting. Sweet! End of Watch is due out Sept. 28.

Get a load of the Gangster Squad

Noir-style cop movies aren't all the rage these days, but Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer and stars Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte and Ryan Gosling seem poised to change all that with their upcoming flick Gangster Squad. Sure, the title is a little silly, but the preview below looks anything but. This tale of a rogue band of cops taking down an L.A. gangster during the dirty 30s looks as badass as the production design is beautiful. Did I mention Emma Stone's in this? She is. This is a great cast and, if there's one thing Hollywood is good at, it's putting on a spectacle. Gangster Squad is due out some time this year, and it's a film I am going to keep on my radar. In the meantime, give this trailer a peep and sound of if you are so inclined. PS: excuse the Revlon ad at the beginning. Just click on as soon as you are allowed. It came with the trailer. Promise! PPS: I gotta dust off my fedora and trenchcoat :)

Micro Review: Blitz

A very different Jason Statham movie. Sure, he plays the toughest of guys and puts foot to ass several times in this cops versus serial killer movie. But this isn't the kind of glorious over-the-top action fest one expects from Hollywood's only working badass. Blitz is more drama than action film, and Statham gives one of his better, more polished performances. I also liked Aidan Gillen's psycho killer and Zawe Ashton's junky cop. This is a solid movie, well made and sharply written with more going on than meets the eye. And I really enjoyed the London setting. That's London in the U.K., not London Ont. Those who only want to see Statham punch and kick things will be disappointed. Us fans who want the man to have a long career in the movies will dig it a lot. Blitz rates a Good for me.

Statham puts foot to ass in Blitz

No one kicks ass like Jason Statham. No one! So when a trailer appears promising the star of  The Transporter and Crank doing what he does best, we here in The Basement applaud. While he's played a variety of ass-kicking criminals in The Italian Job, Snatch and Death Race, he puts on a badge and packs a gun as a British cop in Blitz. The film has Stathan tracking down a serial killer who's murdering London 5-0. Suffice to say he kicks a lot of ass along the way. Blitz is from U.K. director Elliot Lester, and was written by Nathan Parker, who also penned the screenplay for Duncan Jones' Moon. From Moon to ass kicking? Awesome! Blitz is due out some time next year. Until then, we've got the ass-kicking trailer below. Blitz trailer Uploaded by teasertrailer . - Classic TV and last night's shows, online.

Micro Review: Brooklyn's Finest

An absorbing, gritty police drama with bursts of realistic violence. Actually the entire film, with its three intersecting stories, plays stark, honest and brutally real. And, with Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes leading the cast, there's enough intensity and well-acted performances to fill a dozen movies. The film does have its cliched moments, but the strong cast and director Antoine Fuqua's talent for crafting high tension push the picture through them. One of the better cop films since Fuqua's own Training Day. A Good review from The Basement on this one.
