Review: Go/Don't Go

Go/Don't Go is not our usual pint of ale here in The Basement. It's an apocalypse film without the apocalypse... which makes it feel relevant given our pandemic times. It's a quiet film full of long silences and haunting images, with a lot to say without actually saying much of anything. Writer/director Alex Knapp stars in this film about the apparent last man on Earth following some sort of devastation. Only the water and power works, and there's fresh food on store shelves, suggesting there are people out there, if only Knapp's character could let go of his past and move on in life. In that lies the underlying theme of Knapp's film, or at least I think it is. I'm not usually much for digging beneath the surface of a story, but Go/Don't Go forced me to do that. No complaints, as this is worth your time if you're willing to stick with it. I found it a captivating piece of work that held my interest despite the lack of much happening on the surface. W...

The Jennifer N. Linch interview, Top 5 apocalyptic movies, and Ouijageist

Hot off the success of last night's epic broadcast From The Basement comes the podcast version of our show, one that features even more of our interview with the beautiful and talented Jennifer N. Linch! For the uninitiated, Jennifer is a director/producer/actor/model/martial artist who just completed her first feature film; the martial arts/supernatural/romantic comedy Kung Fu Ghost. And she joins us to provide an update on the film, share how production went, and give a hint at what's next for this one-woman filmmaking army! But that's not all, as Jason and Shawn share their list of Top 5 apocalyptic movies. It is the end of the world as we know it, so the Basement Boys decided to sound off on their favourite end-of-the-world flicks. What movies made the cut and what didn't? Stick with us! And don't you dare touch that dial, as the Dynamic Duo put the supernatural horror flick Ouijageist on the chopping block. Hey, if movies called Ouija and Poltergeist ma...

Book Review: Coldbrook

I don't know if you can make it out in the picture above, but FEAR.net hit the nail on the head when it comes to describing Tim Lebbon's apocalyptic thriller Coldbrook; this is first-rate storytelling right here! Lebbon does something I didn't think was possible in this end-of-the-world tale -- he makes zombies interesting again. How so? Ready for the spoiler? OK, I warned you: this zombie apocalypse busts into our world from another dimension, and the zombies are slowly infecting dimension after dimension... threatening all realities. Cool, right! Not only is the idea super groovy, but Lebbon writes like a man possessed. This story moves so fast, and is so relentless, it demands to be read in as few sittings as possible. I took down all 494 pages in a day and a half, pandemic be damned! This is literally the kind of book where, once it gets going, it moves like runaway train. Characters? There's lots of them, with three or four interconnected stories going on...

[REC] 4 Apocalypse trailer hits the web

That's right, the uber popular Spanish horror franchise is back for one last horde invasion. And I used the German word for "big" in reference to a Spanish flick. Wanna fight about it? But don't worry, Basementites, this latest instalment dumps found footage in favour of traditional storytelling. Rejoice!

Sinners and Saints duo return for Daylight's End

It's no deep, dark secret that Shawn and I have a lot of man love for director William Kaufman and actor Johnny Strong's love letter to 80s action cinema, Sinners and Saints. So when we found out Kaufman and Strong have another bad-to-the-ass movie headed our way, we put down or beers and took notice. A post-apocalyptic zombie thriller, Daylight's End sees Strong joined by Sinners and Saints co-stars Louis Mandylor and Mark Hanson, as well as UFC champ Anderson Silva and the great Lance Henriksen. Impressed? We are. Chad Law wrote the film. But what's it about? Check it: years after a mysterious plague has devastated the planet and turned most of humanity into blood-hungry creatures, a rogue drifter on a vengeful hunt stumbles across a band of survivors in an abandoned police station and reluctantly agrees to help them defend themselves and escape to the sanctuary they so desperately need. Sounds like a Basement movie if ever there was one. And, given the un...

Get titty f@$ked by the new This is the End trailer

Self-aware comedies with actors playing themselves is a new concept in Hollywood, which is why we here in The Basement have made note of the upcoming apocalypse comedy This is the End. A few months back we showed you the Red Band teaser trailer. Now we've got the full-on raunchy preview -- which features Seth Rogan , James Franco, Jonah Hill , Danny McBride , Michael Cera , Jay Baruchel , Craig Robinson, Jason Segal Aziz Ansari , Mindy Kaling and Paul Rudd . Yup, the whole Judd Apatow crew. The plot? The world is coming to an end and our A-list cast has to survive. Why do I want to see it? It looks funny as fuck, plus I get to watch Michael Cera die, that twat Aziz Ansari get kicked into a big hole and Emma Watson go postal. My kind of movie. But don't take my word for it, push play and judge for yourselves. The is the End opens June 14. The end is: The Day After Tomorrow

2 Two days. So, literally, the day after tomorrow. Where will you be? The Day After Tomorrow contains my favourite, relaxing, movie soundtrack of all time. I literally don't make it through the opening credits. Not because it is a bad movie, but because it is my comfort movie.   I've seen it a 'few' times. Basically, the premise is, that our "global warming" has forced the earth to repair itself. This repair comes from balancing out the atmosphere, by changing the Oceanic currents, that changed due to the amount of fresh water, from melting glaciers. This forms super storms. The super storms, basically, suck super-cooled air from the upper troposphere . . . etc . . . blah, blah . . . super-nerdy stuff.  Basically, new ice age. The entire northern hemisphere. Survive the cold? I can. I'm Canadian. Nothing new, except a bigger beer fridge for me, bitches. That's what I'll be doing, the day after tomorrow, if the Mayans were righ...

Dead Shadows: The Countdown to Doom

3 Get your affairs in order.  The Mayan Calendar ends in just three days. Ours ends in 13.  Our buddy John Fallon introduced a trailer for Dead Shadows at our 2012 Dark Fest. Since then, we have watched, and reviewed this "end times" flick. We both thought it was great. This movie hits a number of nails on the head, with monsters, titty spider women, violence, gore etc and so forth. Everything the end of the world needs to have to truly, call itself the end. All at the hands of a rogue comet that pixie dusts earth, with monster transforming madness. I wish this movie had a HUGE theatrical release. Maybe a sequel would . . . if they make one. After all, they only have three days left. We are down to the last three days until the end. I wish we had more days, as there are so many more movies that could slide in and countdown to our extinction. Either way, crunch time, folks. 33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

The end is 28 Days Later

4 Four days until 12- 21 -12. Can you handle the coming apocalypse????? Rage zombies. Huh. Took the fun right out of zombie movies. Anyone can run from a slow moving, decaying, deadite. But not these kind.  For me, this movie shut down my hankering for a zombie apocalypse. There are still those that wish it, morbid fuckers, but they will not survive RAGE ZOMBIES. Haha. Waking up from a coma right in the middle of the apocalypse, has got to suck ass too. I don't think I know many horror, B, or zombie fans, that didn't really like this flick. I give it a Good and HOPE this isn't what the Mayan's meant when they ended their calendar.  Maybe, hopefully, they just ran out of rocks to carve. Otherwise, four more days.                                         ...
