Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Stephen King Adaptations

If there is one writer who's indelibly linked to horror, it'd have to be Stephen King.  And when you're as skilled- and prolific a writer as Stephen King, there will inevitably be adaptations of your writing. So, today, I present you my " Top Five Stephen King Adaptations "! 1.  " The Dead Zone " (1983)-  Directed by David Cronenberg, and starring Christopher Walken, this is one of my favorites.  It is a well crafted, and spooky retelling of the story of a man who becomes psychic after an accident, and whose life get entangled with that of a politician who's fated to destroy the world. 2.  " Misery " (1990)-  One of the most faithful adaptations of a story about a writer who meets his "number one fan" after she rescues him from a car accident.  Starring Kathy Bates, and James Caan, director Rob Reiner gives us a slow burning, tale of horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat.  The sledgehammer scene especially is shudder indu...

Doctor Sleep lands an R rating

I don't normally care about movie ratings... except when it comes to action movies and horror movies. And action/horror movies. These are about the only kinds of movies I watch. OK. Fine. I care a lot about movie ratings! Good action movies are typically rated R. Ditto good horror movies. These two genres are supposed to push the limits of not only good taste, but of human endurance. The best of the genres are rated R, with the few exceptions that prove the rule. Now we've received word Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep, which is a sequel Stephen King's The Shining, will be rated R for disturbing content and bloody images. I haven't read Doctor Sleep. It's on my list. But I do know Flanagan strived to not only be faithful to the book, but also to Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining. Anything less than an R rating just doesn't make sense. Doctor Sleep stars Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, and hits theatres everywhere Nov. 8 Source: Collider

From the Corner: "The Shining" (1980)

I just realized that my most "famous" review for the Basement has never actually appeared on the site... the one where I "dis" Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's "The Shining".  What did I say that prompted one e-mail to me stating that Stephen King and I were just jealous because "Kubrick understood the characters better than Stephen King did"? Well, here it is in all its hate inducing glory!

Season Two, Episode I: ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 and Troll Hunter

We are Jason and Shawn and we are back in The Basement! It was a good summer, one spent with family and outdoors fishing, mountain biking, kayaking and camping. But school's back in, the weather's turned to glorious crap and it's time to watch some movies! And that's what Shawn and I will be doing for the next 22 Fridays, come hell or high water! First up is a slasher sequel for the ages. Laid to Rest has some of the most incredible -- and gory -- kills ever put on film. And it was a decent movie too. That means ChromeSkull has some tough shoes to fill as he takes his big, bloody knife and turns it on a new crop of victims. But is this just a rehash of the first movie, or do horror fans get something new this time around? Something original? Stick with us! And you don't want to miss a minute of our thoughts on Troll Hunter, a Norwegian film we first talked about on our Series Premiere last year! It's got subtitles, is another entry in the found-footage gen...
