Monday book review: Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

Ever wonder what happened to the Scooby Doo gang when they grew up? Well, so did author Edgar Cantero, and he's crafted a groovy novel about his own youth detectives in order to explore the fate of Velma, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Scooby Doo later in life. In the case of Meddling Kids, our older -- and emotionally damaged -- heroes return to the summer town where they used to solve mysteries. It turns out the culprit from their most famous case, the Sleepy Lake Monster, wasn't the culprit after all. Sure, he was the guy in the rubber suit who claimed he'd of gotten away with it, but something far more sinister was afoot... and still could be. Meddling kid is at once a reflection on our childhood memories, an ode to Saturday morning cartoons (remember those), and in-your-face pop culture references; all told with some of the smartest, wittiest and most exciting prose I've ever read. Cantero has a habit of dropping out of his usual narrative, and switching to a scr...

Review: Debunkers, Inc

I had the screener for Debunkers, Inc sitting in our Basement email for a few weeks before I got around to watching it. Partly due to our annual vacation, and partly because I wasn't sure what to make of the flick from the trailer. Sell me on it, the trailer did not. But I finally pushed play on this weird little movie -- and I say weird little movie in a kind way -- and ended up having a decent time. Debunkers, Inc is probably the first 100-percent harmless movie I've ever seen. I don't recall any swearing, violence or nudity, making it a solid early teen watch. There's some scares, but they're of a Scooby-Doo level, and therefor fun. Give him a year or so, and my boy could easily take this movie down. The story's about a group of high-school outcasts who form a detective agency, and become embroiled in the case of an allegedly murdered student and a cursed classroom. Sounds pretty Scooby Doo, don't it? I didn't recognize anyone in the cast, b...

Stranger Things meets Scooby Doo in Debunkers, Inc

Stranger Things is still cool, m'kay! And Scooby Doo will never go out of style. So why not mix the two concepts together, tie it into the current paranormal-show craze, and come up with a movie -- set in high school -- just like Rian Johnson's brilliant Brick.? Oh, and throw in a hot blonde too, so there's a nod to Veronica Mars. Always gotta do that... That's exactly what the makers of Debunkers, Inc. did, and the end result hits Amazon Prime, iTunes and Hulu Sept. 3. But we've got a sneak peak at this low-budget flick -- not sure if it's horror, comedy, mystery or all of the above -- right here, right now: Not sure I dig Trailer Guy's voice over, and tonally things seem all over the map, but the concept isn't without interest. And the hot blonde, Nicole DuBois, is certainly that. I'm intrigued just enough to give Debunkers, Inc. a look when time allows. Source: Prolific Pictures

From the Corner: "Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween" (2018)

Sometimes, sequels are better than the original.  Sometimes, sequels are as good as the original.  Often, sequels are worse than the original... While rummaging through an abandoned house looking for scrap to sell, Sonny and Sam come across a mysterious chest in a hidden room.  Inside the chest is a strange, locked book.  Opening the book releases Slappy the Dummy... and all the chaos that follows him.

Jason revisits The Gravedancers

Long before The Basement existed, I ended my work week with a movie double bill over a six pack or two. One flick was chosen from the mainstream, the other from obscurity. On one such Friday night I selected Mike Mendez's The Gravedancers as my obscure title, and there was much rejoicing. Does the flick hold up today? Stick with me! After a night of drunken exploits, Allison, Harris, and Kira are chased and terrorized by the ghosts of a child pyromaniac, an ax murderer, and a rapist.

Jason and Shawn versus Saturday Morning Massacre and Storage 24

Saturday Morning Massacre Jason: This is Scooby Doo for grownups. How so? Well, a group of meddling kids drive around in a van with their dog and debunk hauntings etc. One's a stoner, another's a rich dude, his hot girlfriend and there's a nerdy cute girl. Sounds pretty Scooby Doo to me! How much you enjoy Saturday Morning Massacre depends on how much you dig what it's selling. I liked the nods to Scooby Doo – including a chase scene ripped right from the cartoon – and enjoyed the massacre portion too. And yah, Josephine Decker has great legs. Worth the watch as a curiosity. And it helps to like Scooby Doo too! Good. Shawn : I thought this was alright. It didn’t really leave a lasting impression. Legs. Man, she had great legs….Anyways, was a pretty well made Scooby adventure for adults with all the things you sorta hoped would happen in Scooby Doo, as you aged and began understanding….stuff.. I could almost watch this movie again, and as I think about it, ...

Ruh-roh! Scooby Doo goes dark in Saturday Morning Massacre

Ever wonder what would happen if Scooby Doo and the gang were taken out of Saturday morning cartoons and dumped in the real world? Well, that's the premise behind director Spencer Parsons's upcoming horror parody Saturday Morning Massacre. The film follows four ghosts hunters who travel the country in a vintage van with their canine companion and investigate the paranormal. Sound Familiar? They get far more than they bargained for when they take on an old mansion with a twisted past. If done right, this could be a lot of fun. And the trailer below certainly holds promise. Saturday Morning Massacre is an official selection at this weekend's Los Angeles Film Festival, so our L.A.-based Basement Dwellers might want to check it out and let us know your thoughts. No word yet on a theatrical release, but we'll keep you updated. Until then, here's the trailer for your eye holes.
