His House, Blood Vessel, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight and the Gerard Butler man crush

Monday is once again upon us, but that doesn't mean you have to dread the beginning of another work week. Why? Because the latest podcast From The Basement is here to pleasure your ear holes! While there's no feature review or interview this week -- and there's nothing wrong with that -- Jason and Shawn have put a plethora of flicks and TV shows on the chopping block to make your viewing choices easier. In doing so, one of the Dynamic Duo might express a bit of a man crush on action star Gerard Butler. Which one could this be? Stick with us! Nothing wrong with a man crush by the way. Perfectly healthy. What else will you learn this episode? Is Netflix's acclaimed horror flick His House worthy of the accolades? Do polish filmmakers craft fine backwoods slasher films? Is the first Nazi/vampire/ghost ship movie a genre-defining watch? You will hear the answers to these question, catch the entertainment rundown for the week ahead, and have Jason and Shawn's favourite Fr...

His House has a Blood Vessel so Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight

It's Friday the 13th, so that means it's time to get up to some appropriate shenanigans when From The Basement takes over the Radio NL 610 AM airwaves at 6:05 tonight! Just what kind of appropriate shenanigans would those be? Well, this is technically a movie review/entertainment show, so do the math. Psych! But there are movies to be discussed, not the least of which are new Netflix's entries His House and Nobody Sleeps in the Woods tonight. His House has achieved quite a bit of acclaim, and is supposed to be darn scary. Is this really the case, or is it just hype? Stick with us! And stick with us you will for even more reviews, including the Nazi-vampire flick Blood Vessel, the entertainment rundown for the week ahead, and those appropriate shenanigans we keep talking about. Oh, and one half of the Dynamic Duo might have a man crush on Gerard Butler. Maybe. You can hear it all be tuning in at 6:05 tonight via the 610 AM dial, or the handy Radio NL link to your right.

The Mothman Legacy, Unsolved Mysteries Vol.2 and The Mortuary Collection

How kind are we here at From The Basement? We provide you with not one, nor two, but three opportunities to catch our latest episode, and keep up with all things entertainment. And that third -- but not least -- option is this, the podcast version of our weekly radio show. And boy do we have a podcast for you this week! Jason and Shawn review the latest Small Town Monsters documentary: The Mothman Legacy. This is the production company's first true sequel, and explores in greater detail the story of the infamous Mothman. Is this doc perfect Spooky Season viewing? Stick with us! And stay tuned, as The Basement Boys throw down with the second volume of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, Adam Sandler's seasonal comedy Hubie Halloween, and Shudder's horror anthology The Mortuary Collection.  Plus Shawn took in the grisly Friday the 13th fan film, Vengeance, Mike S returns with another horror-themed review, and Jason provides the weekend entertainment rundown. Oh, and there's...

USAopoly releasing Friday the 13th board game this summer

Jason Voorhees has hacked and slashed his way through feature films, a TV series (kinda), comic books and even video games during Friday the 13th's 40-year history. Now he's ready to set his machete on the world of board games. USAopoly announced a fully licensed Friday the 13th game, subtitled Horror at Camp Crystal Lake, will come out this summer. There's no exact date firmed up yet, but the game will retail for $29.99, and take about an hour to play. In this anxiety-driven, press-your-luck horror game, players take on the roles of cliche camp counsellors like the stereotypical Nerd, the Partier, the Nice Guy, the Final Girl, the Diva, and the Jock as they rely on chance and strategy to survive five nights being terrorized by blood-thirsty Jason. Coveted tools of survival are just within reach to randomly draw from a Camp Bag: cast-iron pans, gasoline, cleavers, flashlights and more. Collect them to make various combinations for points, and use additional Fear car...

Retro Review: Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday

I know it might be sacrilegious to say this, but Jason Goes to Hell is one of my favourite Friday the 13th films. Yes, yes. Calm down. I know Jason as a physical presence is barely in it, the whole body swapping thing comes from out of nowhere, and it's all just really, really silly... but that's why I like it so much. Co-writer/director Adam Marcus, and screenwriter Jay Huguely, basically said "f--k it," and decided to make a fun, stylish, balls-to-the-wall Friday the 13th movie, with more than a slight nod to one of my favourite 80s flicks, The Hidden. The fact this Friday found a home at New Line Cinema, which made The Hidden, should come as no surprise. All the things we love about the Friday movies are here though: the great kills, the summer-camp setting, the teenage sex and drinking, and yes, the boobies. But now there's the added fun of a body swapping serial killer, and more than a little gunplay. Add in a genre-friendly cast, including Erin Gra...

Friday the 13th meets Dog Soldiers in Animal Among Us

I love easy-to-write headlines. I really do. I had one yesterday with One Night in October , and I bloody well have one again today for Animal Among Us. Animal Among Us does indeed take a nod toward Friday the 13th, with its summer-camp setting. The Dog Soldiers reference makes sense given the characters battle against some... thing... in the woods. Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were killed at Merrymaker Campground. The case was filed as an animal attack, the camp condemned, and the beast never found. But something horrific still waits in those woods, ready to kill again... and the camp is about to reopen! Check out the trailer: This looks like fun! We love creature features in The Basement, and we're all about summer-camp slashers as well. Animal Among Us looks like a winner in our books! Animal Among Us stars Don Frye, Christian Oliver, and Larisa Oleynik. It hits DVD and VOD Nov. 19. Source: Uncork'd Entertainment

The Richard Friedman interview, The Intruder and Long Shot

More than 30 feature films, countless hours of television, and the determination to keep doing what he loves -- making movies and entertainment people want to see. That pretty much sums up the talented and versatile director, Richard Friedman. Richard got his start in low-budget movies before making the jump to TV, working on such series as Tales from the Darkside, Friday the 13th, and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. And he's been making movies and television ever since.

Review: The 6th Friend

I've seen a lot of slasher movies in my time, and understand the formula pretty well. Halloween defined the genre, Friday the 13th took it to new levels, and the Scream franchise added a wink and a nudge. I've seen them all, so it's tough to get me hooked on one. The latest entry in the slasher cannon, Jamie Bernadette's The 6th Friend, attempts to blend elements from all these legendary titles into something new and fresh, and for the most part, this movie succeeds.

Jason talks The Final Girls

Slasher movies. Who doesn't love 'em? I know I do. And have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch a classic slasher like say, oh, Friday the 13th, and then find yourself in the movie? Did you? Well, that's what the new horror/comedy The Final Girls hypothesizes. Do the actual shenanigans live up to the possibilities? Stick with me! In truth, The Final Girls isn't as funny as I'd hoped, which isn't surprising as few movies are. But, and this is a heavy but, I did find the end product mucho amusing and surprisingly effective on an emotional level. Emotional you say? Yup, I say.

Friday the 13th TV series on the way

Given the varied success of A&Es Bates Motel and NBC's Hannibal , I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone thought of bringing the story of Crystal Lake's least favourite citizen to the small screen . Turns out that someone is Friday the 13th creator Sean S. Cunningham and horror documentarian Dan Farrands, as a  TV series about the life and times of Jason Voorhees is indeed on the way.

V/H/S director might helm next Friday the 13th

Those rumours that the new Friday the 13th movie could go the found footage route might be true as word has it V/H/S and The Signal co-director David Bruckner is in talks to direct the next instalment in the famed horror franchise. Bruckner wrote and directed the Amateur Night segment for V/H/S. His story involved three guys who bring a mysterious girl back to their hotel room, with terrifying results.

Jason versus The Funhouse

The Funhouse is one of those notorious horror movies I grew up with but never watched, mostly because there was no way I could convince my parents to let me see a Friday the 13th movie when I was nine, never mind something by the guy who made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre . So when the flick turned up on my VOD queue, I thought I'd give it a try. How does this 33-year-old slasher movie rate? Stick with me! Four teenage friends spend the night in a carnival funhouse and are stalked by a deformed man in a Frankenstein mask.

Jason Voorhees kills again in 2015

First the latest chapter in the Insidious franchise claimed a 2015 release date and now another popular, and long running, horror series has asked fans to save the date that year. The next Friday the 13th movie lands on March 13, 2015. That's a Friday, for the record. Nothing else is known about the flick. There's no script or director attached, no confirmation on whether or not it'll be a direct sequel to the 2009 film or found footage, as some recent rumours suggest. And no one has been cast, so who's to say if Derek Mears , Kane Hodder or any of the other former Jasons will once again put on the hockey mask and wield the machete. What we do know is countless Friday the 13th fans just plugged that date into their calendar. More on this project as it develops. Interview with a legend: Harry Manfredini

Kill, kill, kill . . . ma, ma, ma! By taking the line of dialogue "Kill her, mommy. Kill her" and integrating it into the score for Friday the 13th, composer Harry Manfredini made cinematic history. He also coined one of the most spoken phrases in the movie nerd vocabulary, and we love him for it. Last night Shawn and I spent about 40 glorious minutes chatting with the composer about movies, music and movie music (duh). And we wish we had more time. But the 30-or-so-minute interview born from that conversation is Basement gold, which is actually better than I just made it sound. You'll be able to hear our interview with Harry, who's composed scores for 100 or so features and counting, on our Dec. 2 episode. Think of it as an early Christmas present for Basement Dwellers. Sorry to tease you so early, but that's what we are in The Basement . . . teases . . . ish. And a big shout out to the lovely Brooke Lewis for helping make the interview happen. As you know,...

The Month of Horror Day 13: Friday the 13th

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And, on the 13th day of his movie marathon, he grabs his machete and hockey mask and wishes us all a happy Friday the 13th. Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch ha-ha-ha-ha-ha... Camp Crystal Lake is calling! The first in the Friday the 13th series is still my favourite as it does just about everything right for a slasher flick. Sex and booze? Check. The good girl "virgin"? Check. Mysterious psychotic killer? Check. Kevin Bacon getting an arrow jammed through his throat? CHECK! Funny thing about this movie is that Jason, the hockey mask wearing, machete wielding, unkillable lunatic isn't actually the villain in this instalment, instead it's his mother! **SPOILER ALERT** (wait, did I do that right? Whatever, it's 30 years old, you'll get over it). Just a really fun series to watch, ...
