Compared to the sea of mediocrity surrounding it, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is practically overflowing with it.

This animated movie is vibrant, kinetic, and extremely inventive with its art style. On top of all that, this is just a solid movie. It tells its story with sincerity and tact, always focusing on the important aspects of Miles' emotional journey. The script wastes no time on pointless scenes or moments, which also gives the film an energetic rhythm that draws you in.

One of the other great aspects of this movie is its reinvention of the Spider-Man story. It's clever writing demonstrates a true understanding of the webslinger, and offers commentary on the current state of his movie adaptations. In the end, you get a film both Spidey fans and non-fans can enjoy.

Above all other aspects, what I like most about Spider-Verse is how fun it is. It demonstrates quality animation and filmmaking doesn't need to be cynical and a downer to engage and captivate. I highly recommend checking this one out if you haven't already. It's definitely a Good.
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-76410337127896584262021-06-22T13:48:00.000-07:002021-06-22T13:48:45.475-07:00Safety's Off: "Lethal Weapon 2" (1989)

Tuesday is upon us- which means it's time or me to lock and load again as I chase Riggs and Murtaugh across Los Angeles in another action packed "Lethal Weapon" movie...

A routine drug bust by Riggs and Murtaugh goes awry- hinting that things are a bit deeper than they think.

Smuggled krugerrands, an FBI witness, and the South African consulate all collide with the two cops as they they lock sights on the biggest case of their careers...

"Lethal Weapon 2" isn't as intensely emotional as the first one. As the two partners further cement their partnership and friendship, things lighten up a bit between the two- which is fitting as it echoes Rigg's growth from the angry, suicidal personality he was in the first movie into a more "stable" person learning to deal with his grief, and open up to Murtaugh as a friend. It's a nice adjustment.

While Riggs gets a lot of development in this movie, Murtaugh, sadly- doesn't get as much. He's still enjoyable to watch, but it would be nice if there was a bit of a change in direction or him. The addition of Leo Getz, worried me a bit- as I was concerned that the slightly "wackier" character he played would overshadow and become the focus of the movie. Fortunately, he didn't, and was used sparingly... balancing out nicely with the more straight faced and natural comedy of the main characters.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are- once again, great as Riggs and Murtaugh. Joe Pesci as Leo Getz was also good. Real credit goes to Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor, who play Arjen Rudd and Pieter Vorstedt- the Consulate and his right hand man respectively. They brought a nice sense of menace to their characters that made you sneer at them, and eager to see how they would meet their ends. Patsy Kensit as Rika van den Haas- Rigg's love interest was quite enjoyable too, and it was a little disappointing that she ultimately was simply their to help motivate Rigg's rampage of revenge.

The action sequences were on par with the first movie- with a great reference to Rigg's running down the street from the first movie. The toilet bomb, and the trailer shoot-up were amazing and incredibly well done. Who'd ever thing a toilet bomb could be a great way to bond, eh?

While "Lethal Weapon 2" may not has the grit of the first one, it's an enjoyable and worthy sequel. It aims high, and hits "The Good".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-91999890006034723842021-06-21T11:03:00.000-07:002021-06-21T11:03:06.012-07:00THE HAUNTED VILLAGE Part 1 of 2 (2021) - We Want to Believe

On a cold, wintery weekend before Halloween, the We Want to Believe team is invited to explore the Village of Ashcroft, which is in the Interior of British Columbia. For me, it would often flip-flop between interesting and bland. It had some intriguing concepts and characters throughout, but these would often be overshadowed by a meandering and haphazard plot.

There were many subplots that were underutilized, misused, or straight-up abandoned by the end. The Infinite Corridor, for example, is a plot point that's given a lot of build up in Season 3. It gets well established, a character's fate gets tied to it... and it's turned into a useless footnote in the last season.

It seemed like the show's mission statement would change from season to season, so established plot threads would have to be re-woven to accommodate. Regardless, this show is still a good watch, and there is some splendid animation by the end. I'd still call this series a Good.
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-16164715022687486082021-06-15T13:48:00.000-07:002021-06-15T13:48:09.318-07:00Safety's Off: "Lethal Weapon" (1987)

After taking a short break after my "Run, Bandit, Run" series, I'm back. This time, I'm taking aim... with a "Lethal Weapon"...

50 year old Sergeant Murtaugh has a nice home, a lovely family, a new fishing boat, and a fairly safe career...

Sergeant Rigs has a motor home, memories of his deceased wife, a risky career... and a "special" bullet for a "special" occasion...

When they get partnered up, it becomes a question of who'll get the "special" bullet in the end...

1987's "Lethal Weapon" helped to transform the Buddy Cop movie from a genre that was generally comedic to one that had action, humor, and depth of character.

The story is pretty 1980's in that it consisted of drug cartels- which was the real hot topic back then due to Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign. But it's really only the bones from which hangs the real "flesh" of the movie- the relationship between Riggs & Murtaugh. Their conflict, and the growth of their characters as they go through the events of the story are what really holds this movie together, and keeps you engaged from start to finish.

It helps that the characters are interesting to begin with- and prove wonderful contrasts with each other. If it weren't for their differences, the story of they becoming partners and friends wouldn't be so interesting. Nor would it have provided them both with room for growth. Their different personalities and viewpoints on the world balance each other, and add a wonderful texture to the movie.

Now, it has to be said that the characters probably wouldn't be so engaging if it weren't for the performers. Danny Glover as Murtaugh is marvelous, and Mel Gibson as Riggs is amazing. Both performers bring such charisma, chemistry, humor, and depth to the characters. The scene where Riggs contemplates suicide is just intense and powerful. And Gary Busey as Mr. Joshua is crazed as always. He's great as a bad guy.

"Lethal Weapon" helped to action-ize Buddy Cop movies- and in grand style. The action sequences are intense and exciting. They help pace the movie nicely, and raise the stakes as the story progresses. They are great interludes between the more personal and dramatic moments between the characters.

All in all, "Lethal Weapon" is one of my favorite 1980's action movies- and gets a "Good".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-81703595131011971842021-06-14T07:46:00.001-07:002021-06-14T07:46:40.977-07:00The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Wrath of Man and Army of the Dead

The Basement Boys are back! It hosts a variety of interesting concepts, unique art styles, and a fair helping of gore. In the current era of restricted, often sanitized science fiction, this series is so refreshing in its creative freedom.

Unsurprisingly, the show's quality can be hit or miss. Some episodes are fairly generic, and offer little substance on the second watch. However, this is somewhat balanced by the great attention paid to the animation and stylization of each story.

This is a futuristic, sardonic box of chocolates that's got something for almost every kind of sci-fi nerd. Even if certain episodes fall short, they still manage to be thought provoking and entertaining. That's the good news.

The bad news it'll be the first of our final three prime-time shows.

What, you might ask? Are you bastards quitting AGAIN!?!? No. No we're not. We learned our lesson the last time. Shawn and I's long-running show will return to being "just a podcast," and not adhering to any set broadcast schedule.

Why, you ask? Our lives are becoming increasingly busy outside of The Basement, and it's getting harder for Shawn and I to keep up with the latest movies, TV shows and entertainment news. We'd rather cease our weekly duties than produce an inferior product. Simple as that.

Much thanks to Howie Reimer and the Radio NL crew for hosting us the last three years, first as a Friday morning segment, then as a prime-time series. It's been a blast!

Don't worry, we're not coasting on these last three episodes. They'll hit you right in your entertainment centre. We promise.

Tune in next Friday, June 11, at 6:05 P.M. And only on Radio NL.

Stick with us!
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-6725278157829652722021-06-03T08:16:00.001-07:002021-06-03T08:16:41.988-07:00Marcus Flor vs Invincible

It's not often I find anything superhero related that I wholeheartedly recommend, but the animated series Invincible is just one of those pieces of media.

Invincible is an adult superhero series, in more ways than one. It has the violence, gore, and swearing you'd expect with that kind of tag line, but it's fairly adult with it's storytelling as well. Instead of characters taking a back seat to the action, as they do in most superhero stuff, their struggles and internal conflicts are front and center.

We get to see the consequences of wearing the cape and saving people, we get to see how difficult a job it is, and how you can't save everyone no matter how invincible you are. I was afraid this series would end up being just another "edgy" addition to the genre, but was pleasantly surprised at how mature it was.

Now, don't get me wrong. There's still plenty of fun, superpowered action to be had here. Thanks to it being animated, everything hits with greater impact; superspeed seems genuinely fast, and you see how frail typical humans are against these powers. This show has got layers, from the base entertainment on the surface, to the subtler human stories just beneath it.

As I said up top, I whole-heartedly recommend this show. Grab some goods, gather some friends, and prepare for several "oh shit" moments to be had. By my hand is this week's tip and sip... a Super Root Beer...

All you need to make this drink is some ice in a tumbler, an ounce o spiced rum, and ounce of root beer schnapps, and some Coca-Cola. For this, I used Black Bear Honey Spiced Rum by Divine Vineyards.

I found this drink to be okay. Not great, but not shit either. It just kinda is. It does taste like root beer- though a bit sweeter due to the honey based rum.

But in all honesty, the flavor and the effect could've been done with fewer ingredients. Two in fact. Root beer, and rum- or the root beer schnapps even. Less fuss and muss.

I don't think most bars have root beer schnapps... nor do I think most pubs do. I also don't think most people think of having a bottle of it around. Due to that, this isn't really a drink you're likely to find being made in many places.

The taste is okay- but could be made shit simple. I'm going to have to put it in the "Ugly".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-6201963812100501742021-06-01T13:05:00.000-07:002021-06-01T13:05:42.541-07:00Run, Bandit, Run: "Bandit: Bandit's Silver Angel" (1994)

Tuesday rolls around with clear skies, clear lakes, and clear highways. Along the long stretches Smokey can be found chasing the Bandit... and adventure follows close behind.

After his uncle passes away, Bandit finds himself helping a beautiful widow keep their carnival afloat.

But all is not as it seems with this carnival. It hides a secret... a shiny, glittery secret that others would kill to keep for themselves...

"Bandit: Bandit's Silver Angel" sees the 1990's TV movie series based on the original "Smokey and the Bandit" films come to a close. And to be honest, it wasn't a bad send-off for the series.

Brian Bloom once again brings a pleasant charm and playfulness to the character of Bandit. While Donald O'Connor didn't get a lot of screen time, he brought quite a bit of humour to his character as Uncle Cyrus, and gave a solid impression that he's one of the few characters that could easily outwit Bandit. Traci Lords in the role of Angel, sadly felt a little flat and emotionless at times- which is a shame because she's actually not that bad of an actress.

I also want to compliment David Lenthall as Sheriff Clanton, and Deacon Dawson & Jeffrey Pillars as Deputies Joe and Ed respectively. Lenthall brought a fun energy to the character that had some nice echoes of Boss Hogg and Sheriff Roscoe from "The Dukes of Hazzard". Dawson and Pillars were great as a comedic duo. Their nonchalance when interacting with both the Sheriff and the Bandit made me smile every time.

While "Bandit: Bandit's Silver Angel" may not be a great movie, it is still an enjoyable example of television entertainment. Watching this installment, I was actually kinda sad that this series had to come to an end. I would've liked to have seem more adventures of Bloom's version of the Bandit. I'm giving this one a "Good".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-58609428135497734362021-05-27T10:16:00.000-07:002021-05-27T10:16:02.434-07:00Marcus Flor vs Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

It's rare to find a movie as haunting and darkly profound as Apocalypse Now. It's even rarer to be able to see how such a film is made, in raw and intimate detail.

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse documents the turbulent production of the anti-war classic, and its ambitious director's slow decent into madness. It's probably one of the best filmmaking documentaries I've ever seen. It captures the fluid chaos of making a movie, and how that experience bleeds into the final product.

This documentary is both inspiring and horrifying for an amateur filmmaker to watch. You see director Francis Ford Coppola pushed to his limits, unwilling to give up on a movie that had a chance of being truly great. In some way, I understand that parasitic obsession, and the toll it can take on its host.

Documented by Elanor Coppola during the production, this film is also incredibly personal. It's not just a record of technical chaos, but an investigation of the director's soul. Just like the characters of his movie, Francis must face the darkest parts of himself to achieve his goal.

In the end, this film is as poignant as the masterpiece its documenting. I highly recommend a back-to-back viewing with Apocalypse Now, as the two film are really two side of the same coin. This one is definitely a Good.
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-74609008604252802382021-05-25T13:20:00.000-07:002021-05-25T13:20:49.723-07:00Run, Bandit, Run: "Bandit: Beauty and the Bandit" (1994)

Tuesday arrives in roar of a fast engine, and sirens as I hit the road again in pursuit of that iconic outlaw, Bandit...

On his way to open the Coca-Cola 600, a chance encounter with a mob boss's girlfriend sends Bandit on a detour involving a tour bus of nudists...

And some nuns...

And an Elvis impersonator...

"Bandit: Beauty and the Bandit" is a silly movie- but one that harkened back to the rather silly antics of Burt Reynolds in the original movies (and it's spiritual relative, "The Cannonball Run"). Anthony Mackie does a fine job portraying him, but the script he's working with can't seem to settle on who this guy is. Maybe he's a womanizing bachelor, maybe he's a science nerd, or maybe he feels out of place in his own time. It's not that you can't tie these threads together into one complex character, but the filmmakers didn't know the right knot.

What I did appreciate was some of the inspired cinematography. It felt like the camera was trying to heighten the emotions of each scene, rather than just blindly capture the moment as most movies do. Regardless of the script/directing decisions, it wasn't hard to tell the people manning the camera put some passion into it.

Despite the patchy nature of this movie, I'd still recommend it as a decent thought-provoker. Maybe smoke something and give it a watch, because I'd still call Synchronic a Good.
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-34766215490325864862021-05-19T13:39:00.000-07:002021-05-19T13:39:37.095-07:00#CocktailHour: Slushtail

Summer approaches, inspiring thoughts of sunshine, backyard parties, and having a tip and sip with friends. With that in mind, I bring you this week sunny beverage.

To make a slushtail, mix a can of frozen orange juice, a can of frozen lemonade (or limeade), a can of pineapple juice, a couple cups of black tea (or English Breakfast), and two cups of bourbon- such as Southern Comfort, in a pitcher. When it's all nicely mixed, put it in the freezer until it's a nice slushy consistency.

Scoop the slush into a cocktail glass, and pour in some Sprite or 7-Up. Add a little umbrella for some frivolous fun, and a straw.

Voila! Ready to enjoy.

This is a very refreshing drink. The fruit juices, Sprite, and bourbon- when chilled makes for a great punch-like drink. The bourbon doesn't overwhelm juices. In fact, they are all nicely balanced in terms of flavors. The sourness of the citrus fruits contrasts well with the slightly sweeter Southern Comfort. It was refreshing enough that I had very little problems enjoying a second serving.

The slushtail is definitely a party drink. You can easily prepare it a few hours before a friend's party- or your own. Since it fills up a pitcher, there'd be plenty to serve yourself and others. Or, you can keep the pitcher in the freezer, and serve yourself up a drink on those hot summer days over the course of a few weeks or months as you laze around the back yard in your hammock.

If you want a simple to make drink for parties, or a refreshing beverage to handle the hot days, then the slushtail is the drink for you. I give it a cool, crisp, "Good".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8108227987451404170.post-63284291454588841862021-05-18T13:27:00.000-07:002021-05-18T13:27:47.394-07:00Run, Bandit, Run: "Bandit: Bandit, Bandit" (1994)

We are back on the highway again, keeping the flashing lights of Smokey's car in the rearview mirror, and adventure on the horizon as we bring you the fifth installment of the "Smokey and the Bandit" franchise.

An imposter has stolen Bandit's rig and a prototype car he was hired to deliver. Using everything at his disposal, he has to chase down this rogue and get the car back.

All, while avoiding "Smokey"...

"Bandit: Bandit, Bandit" is the second made for TV movie in the franchise. You can tell that the TV movies were meant to be a TV series, as the opening credits look exactly like the one from "Bandit: Bandit Goes Country", and looks very TV series-ish.

I mentioned in my review of "Bandit: Bandit Goes Country" that it had a weird "90210"/"Dukes of Hazzard" vibe to it. Well... imagine my surprise and amusement when "Smokey" (in the form of Sheriff Enright) is revealed to be played by John Schneider.

Bo fucking Duke!

I have to say that I certainly appreciated the irony of one of the most iconic "outlaws" of TV now wearing a Sheriff's uniform.

I was actually surprised by this TV movie. It had a fun atmosphere, and charm that did bring to mind the fun and wit of the original movie. The comedy was a bit more understated than the movie- but lighthearted spirit of it was absolutely there.

The acting in this movie was improved from the previous one. I quite enjoyed Brian Bloom in the role of Bandit. I also enjoyed Brian Krause as Bandit's friend/partner in crime, Lynn. Schneider brought a wonderful arrogance to the Sheriff's role without overpowering the rest of the cast.

This installment of the "Smokey and the Bandit" franchise was a quick paced story with some nice little action sequences. It's not a deep movie by any stretch of the highway. It knows that it's job is to entertain and pass the time- and it does it quite well in my opinion.

If I'm ever in the mood for a bit of 1990's TV nostalgia, I think that I would actually consider putting this movie on for a re-watch. I'm going to give it a "Good".
We Came from the Basementhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03966629589771164346noreply@blogger.com0
