It's tip and sip time again! This week, I'm checking out Tofino Brewing's "Dawn Patrol Coffee Porter"!
As usual, we start with the label. It's not super eye catching or colorful- but is still quite appealing in it's grounded and relaxed design. The earthy brown tones mesh well together with the look of the text and graphics. I especially love the stylized sun rising, and how it's framed by the brew's name. The cloth-like texture of the label hints at the sacks that coffee beans are shipped in, while the colour brings to mind it's rich colour. A simple design- but quite elegant and effective in my opinion.
Tofino's "Dawn Patrol Coffee Porter" has a nice, deep coffee brown to it. It creates a nice, creamy head of foam that contrasts beautifully with the richness of the brew. Makes you think of a nice, strong cup of morning coffee.
While it looks strong, you'd be surprised at how mild this 6.5% beer tastes. The first sip was a nice smooth one. It delivered that delicious coffee taste, with just a hint of vanilla. A delightful taste that carried on with each subsequent sip. It maintained it's flavor and quality as I worked my way through the bottle. A very evenly made brew. Quite a relaxing and enjoyable experience... from the first to the last sip.
Most "coffee" flavoured beers use artificial means to get the flavor, but I was pleased to discover that Tofino actually conditioned it with locally roasted coffee beans- adding only bourbon soaked vanilla beans, and chocolate malts for a little more texture to the flavor.
If you enjoy coffee- and possibly even if you don't- I would absolutely recommend trying it out. This is one of those ones that I would pick up on a regular basis to enjoy, and I would have more than one. Tofino Brewing's "Dawn Patrol Coffee Porter" is one of my favorites so far, gets a solid "Good" from me!
