While the Mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven a powerful force at the box office and among fans, Marvel's Netflix lineup is a bit shaky. Each series has its own merits (maybe not Iron *spits* Fist) but only The Punisher has managed to hold my interest through the full season.
The Punisher and, of course, Daredevil.
Daredevil is hands down the best of the Marvel Netflix shows, and one of the few remaining now that Iron Fist and Luke Cage have been cancelled. The series continues in fine fashion with this third season. In fact, after a slow warmup, this could be the strongest run yet for Matt Murdock and company.
How so? The show has returned its gritty and grounded vigilante roots, setting aside The Hand and the mysticism that came with it in favour of a good 'ole Daredevil vs Kingpin storyline that borrows heavily from Frank Miller's Born Again arc from the comics.
And we finally meet Daredevil's "Joker." Yup: Bullseye is a major player this season, which this Daredevil fan has been looking forward to, and I was not disappointed. Bullseye can turn anything into a lethal weapon, and he does so here in fine, and gruesome, style.
The series continues to do a brilliant job balancing action and fight scenes with heavy character development. Matt's crisis of being is one that hits home for this critic. He's broken and lost after the events of The Defenders, and needs to find his faith and soul again. It makes for great television, and Charlie Cox is still the only one who should ever play The Man Without Fear.
Ditto Vincent D'Onofrio, who is the living embodiment of The Kingpin. This time he brings some vulnerability to the part, while also being a powerful and imposing presence. He's definitely the last person on the planet you want to fuck with!
I could go on about how great Deborah Ann Woll is as Karen Page, and how Elden Henson remains a perfect Foggy Nelson, but what's the point? Oh, I just kinda did. . .
If you're fan, you'll continue to love Daredevil. If not, catch up on the first two seasons NOW and get on with it!. It's a Good.
