You know what day it is?
FRIDAY!
You know what time it is?
TIP AND SIP TIME!
Yaaaay!
This week, we take a hit from Driftwood Brewery's Twenty Pounder Double IPA.
This is one of the more inventive, creative, and cool labels I've come across in my years of enjoying beer. I love the way the "sea ghost" is drawn (using bones as ornamentation on the uniform is great) in mostly black and white, with colour mostly limited to the face- making it pop nicely, and drawing your eye to both the company logo, and the cleverly done hole in the chest. I really appreciate that they used the hole in the chest as a window to highlight the colour of the beer in the bottle. The logo, and text at the botton fit nicely within the whole image. The sort of image I'd be willing to hang up on the wall.
This double India Pale Ale has a beautiful, golden colour that carries a slight haze due to being unfiltered. The sediment from this process creates a very light cloudiness that shifts gently like clouds before the end of a storm, and the sun comes out.
The first sip lets you know that this is a brew holding 9% alcohol. I was taken aback by the first volley. Once you recover from that first cannon shot of taste, the rest of the experience is kinda smooth- though there were a few mouthfuls that felt like I was hit in the chest with a twenty pounder. The jarring nature of it, unfortunately made it a bit of a challenge to get to the end of the bottle.
As much as I loved the label, colour, and India Pale Ales in general, I found that Driftwood Brewery's Twenty Pounder Double IPA was just too "scatter shot" in its delivery of flavour to enjoy fully. I can't say that I'd really recommend it- and I sadly, won't be revisiting this battle field. I have to give it an "Ugly"
